The U.S. has an opportunity to accelerate offshore wind energy growth and benefit from 28 new gigawatts of clean energy and $1.7 billion in U.S. Treasury revenue by 2022, a new study released today from research group Wood Mackenzie finds.

Findings from this study confirm additional lease areas are needed to meet demand, reduce energy costs, increase competition, and ultimately generate thousands of jobs and billions in investment. Additionally, the findings offer guidance to decision-makers...

Wind Energy Could Be The Future of Maritime Industry

  • Six ships operating with Flettner rotors including an Ultramax bulk carrier.
  • They also include an oil tanker, ferries, and vehicle carriers.
  • They comprise narrow vertical rotors that don’t take up too much room.
  • The motors can be mounted on trolleys, moved during loading and unloading operations for cargo ships.
  • IWA has a purpose-built wind-assisted ship and powered entirely by wind.
  • It provides a 50% average reduction in fuel consumption and GHG emissions.

Will wind turbine transporters continue to roll during COVID-19?

The coronavirus pandemic’s global spread earlier this year put the brakes on many U.S. industrial project cargoes, but truckloads of behemoth wind turbine components continue to roll across the nation’s highways.

“Our wind turbine component load count for this year is up 36%,” said Gene Lemke, vice president of projects for St. Cloud, Minnesota-based Anderson Trucking Service (ATS), in a telephone interview with American Shipper. “It’s been a huge bright spot during these difficult times.”

Path Forward for offshore wind leasing on OCS

Deepwater Wind's Block Island Wind Farm is the first commercial wind energy project inU.S. waters. Department of Energy photo.

What is the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s overall offshore wind leasing strategy? This is a question that is frequently asked during the many wind events in which we participate.

The demand for offshore wind energy has never been greater. Plummeting costs, technological advances, skyrocketing demand and great economic potential have all combined to make offshore wind a highly promising avenue for adding to a diversified national energy portfolio.

The U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS)...

BOEM outlines New York Bight wind energy areas

BOEM has outlined draft wind energy areas in the New York Bight. BOEM image.

Up to 9.6 gigawatts of offshore wind energy could be generated on lease tracts in the New York Bight outlined by the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency says.

Two weeks before a meeting with state and regional agencies in New York City, BOEM issued a draft plan for wind energy areas (WEAs) off the coasts of New York and New Jersey – a key stop toward preparing for future lease sales, like those already sold off southern New England.

The draft plan outlines up to 793,862 acres of...
