Republicans attempt rollback of electric truck rule

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration’s recent final rule setting new carbon emissions standards for truck makers could be overturned if Republicans in Congress get their way.

Senate and House Republicans on Wednesday introduced a resolution of disapproval of the Environmental Protection agency’s Phase 3 greenhouse gas emissions rule for heavy-duty trucks.

Co-authored by Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska and Rep. Russ Fulcher of Idaho, the resolution invokes the Congressional Review Act (CRA), a legal...

DOT unlocks money for clean-truck parking capacity

Aerial view of parked trucks.

The Biden administration wants to leverage funds from a new pot of $6.4 billion earmarked for pollution-cutting transportation projects to boost much-needed truck parking capacity across the country.

The money will flow to individual states through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Carbon Reduction Program (CRP), administered by the Federal Highway Administration. The five-year program was authorized by the federal infrastructure law signed by President Joe Biden last year.

Truck Tech: Good versus the perfect edition

Is a measured approach to zero-emission trucking versus going all-in on electrification reversing the amorphism about the perfect being the enemy of the good? Also this week, add one autonomous trucking advisory board, and Cummins makes further natural gas engine inroads in a supply deal with Peterbilt.

Fooling with Voltaire

Voltaire’s memorable expression — the perfect is the enemy of the good — gets reversed when it comes to the rush to electric trucks versus a more deliberate transition from...

Report: Zero-emission truck deployment ‘quite low’ but ramping up

Calstart released a report about the state of zero emission truck deployment in the U.S.

More than 1,200 medium- and heavy-duty zero emission trucks (ZETs) have been deployed in the U.S. as of December, according to a Calstart report released Thursday. This represents just 0.005% of the more than 24 million conventional trucks on the road in the U.S.

“The actual number of deployed vehicles is still quite low, and we do expect to see shifts in delivery dates and actual delivery of those on order as the market players continue to evolve,” Kevin Walkowicz, senior director of truck...

$500M STEER Act could help bridge gap to zero-emission trucks

As the Biden administration moves quickly to promote zero-emission trucks, new legislation will take a more conservative approach that supporters say would help the industry cut emissions even sooner.

The Supporting Trucking Efficiency and Emission Reductions (STEER) Act, expected to be formally unveiled this week by U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., authorizes $100 million annually from 2022-2026, for a total of $500 million, to set up a voucher program for retrofitting heavy-duty trucks with...

Owner-operators, small trucking companies key to success of clean truck programs

“It speaks to an issue in the industry, which is the costs are falling on owner-operators when the [clean air] benefits are much more widespread than that.”

The success of California’s ambitious zero-emission truck programs hinges on providing financial incentives to small trucking companies so they can afford to buy the vehicles, which cost roughly three times as much as diesel models.

That was the takeaway of a panel discussion hosted last week as part of a symposium introducing yet another...
