The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has started a new ro-ro operation in collaboration with the Government of Assam, to improve connections with Majuli Island. The idea is to reduce the time required for road haulage transport which at present has to use a 400km road route, via the Tezpur Road Bridge. By contrast the use of the river route by ro-ro ships requires a distance of less than 13km.
