MSC’s market share now at 20% as fleet nears 6 million TEUs

MSC now has a market share of 20%, as its aggressive newbuilding drive and ship purchases placed the largest liner operator’s fleet at just under 6 million TEUs.

Alphaliner’s report stated that MSC’s fleet now stands at 837 ships of 5.98 million TEUs, putting the Swiss-Italian operator “one big ship delivery” away from hitting the 6 million TEU mark. These include 539 owned ships of nearly 3 million TEUs.

MSC’s strategy has made it grow faster than any of its peers, enabling it to overtake Maersk...

2M alliance changes California terminal on Transpacific service

2M alliance has announced a terminal change on its TP 8/Orient service, a Transpacific service connecting Asia and the United States West Coast.

As of 5 July 2024, beginning with the vessel Maersk Shivling voyage 424, the service operated by Maersk and MSC will operate in Los Angeles (Pier 400) instead of Long Beach (Pier T).

“There will be no changes to transit times as a result of the new terminal changes,” said the two ocean carrier partners.

Booming May rates mask the looming capacity bomb

Massive increases in container shipping rates since 2 May are the consequence of Asian port congestion, US import demand, reduced Asia to Europe capacity and the ongoing geopolitical risks seen in the Red Sea, sending rates soaring by 28.8% in two weeks.

Drewry Shipping consultants said that average container freight rates had fallen week-on-week by 2.6% between 25 January and early May, boosting the top line of container shipping companies and their share prices by 19% this year so far.

However,...

Red Sea crisis still leaves alliances short of ships, as newbuildings fully absorbed

The three container shipping alliances are still short of 36 ships, or 10% of the required tonnage, to entirely fulfill their 25 Asia – Europe loops as of 10 May.

Despite record newbuilding deliveries this year, and 1.14 million TEUs delivered so far, the Red Sea crisis has soaked up all available tonnage.

Alphaliner’s report says, “Taking into account that the average vessel size on this trade currently stands at 14,150 TEUs, some 509,400 extra slots are still needed. This represents 9.6% of the...

MSC consolidates pole position with largest Asia-Europe share

MSC accounted for half of the capacity growth in the Asia-Europe lanes that resulted from the diversion to the Cape of Good Hope due to the Red Sea crisis.

According to Alphaliner’s latest report, MSC added 279,000 TEUs to services operated as part of its 2M alliance with Maersk Line, and 208,500 TEUs for its standalone services, such as the “Dragon” Far East-Mediterranean loop and the “Swan” Far East-North Europe-Baltic loop.

The capacity additions of 488,500 TEUs amounted to a 54% increase in...

Carrier alliance analysis: Ocean Alliance expands on Asia-North Europe

Sea-Intelligence looked at the development in capacity market shares between the three carrier alliances on the Transpacific and Asia-Europe trades.

Capacity market share is the share of the total deployed capacity within each trade lane that is operated by each of the three carrier alliances, explains the Danish maritime data analysis company.

On Asia-North America West Coast, the alliances collectively lost capacity market shares, especially during the pandemic, when capacity outside of the...

2M dissolution shifts to Atlantic

Dismantling the 2M alliance has focused on the transatlantic trade with Maersk and MSC dissolving the shared operations in two major loops, with a third jointly operated service already served by one carrier.

Three major loops on the Atlantic, the TA/NEUATL 1,2 and 3 services, were jointly operated by the 2M alliance, however, the TA/NEUATL1 was operated by US-flagged vessels that were only deployed by Maersk.

The TA2/NEUATL2 had already become a Maersk-operated loop in September, following a cut...

“Schedule reliability recovery rate for 2M was above Ocean and THE Alliance for Asia-North Europe trade lane,” reports Sea-Intelligence

To gauge which of the three container carrier alliances recorded the fastest post-pandemic recovery in schedule reliability, Danish maritime data analysis company Sea-Intelligence pegged their lowest recorded schedule reliability during the pandemic as month “0” and then looked at the change from that baseline in the next months.

Blanked sailings now the norm

Blanked Asia-Europe sailings have become expected in liner operators’ routines, according to Alphaliner’s latest report today (16 August).

Record newbuilding deliveries have made operators reduce sailings to manage capacity and THE Alliance has the largest percentage of skipped schedules.

THE Alliance has blanked just over 10 of its sailings, translating to nearly 20% of sailings that have been skipped. In comparison, the OCEAN Alliance has skipped 10 of its 90-odd voyages, amounting to a...
