Vessel-hungry MSC set to take Maersk’s crown as world’s largest box line

Based on box ship orderbooks and its aggressive purchasing in the second-hand market, MSC is set to usurp 2M partner Maersk next year to become the world’s largest container line.
According to Alphaliner data, the capacity gap between the two carriers currently stands at around 225,000 teu, with the Danish carrier operating a fleet of 709 ships for 4,121,964 teu, while MSC’s 588-ship fleet has a capacity of 3,897,002 teu.
However, the …

Now 2M cuts delay-hit port of Liverpool from calls on transatlantic loop

The UK port of Liverpool will see calls by the 2M transatlantic loop it won from Felixstowe at the end of last year suspended until mid-May, as Maersk and MSC grapple to improve schedule reliability.
The 2M alliance said that, as a result of bad weather in the North Atlantic compounded by port congestion, it will temporarily suspend the Liverpool and New York calls of its TA2/NEUATL2 transatlantic loop for six …

2M snubs congested west coast ports as Asia-US pendulum services are axed

To improve schedule reliability, 2M partners Maersk and MSC are to avoid congested US west coast ports with two transpacific pendulum services.
From this week, the AE1/Shogun and AE6/Lion loops from Asia will turn in North Europe instead of going on to the US.
And to “facilitate the network adjustments”, the 2M said it would blank next week’s AE55/Griffin sailing from Asia to North Europe.
Maersk said the decision to discontinue the pendulum …

Buoyant ocean carriers set to roll out peak season surcharges months early

Asia-North Europe container spot rates eased back slightly this week, as carriers ‘hoovered up’ stockpiled cargo accumulated before Chinese New Year.
However, rates from Asia to the US increased again.
Today’s reading of the Freightos Baltic Index (FBX) for a 40ft from Asia to North Europe was $8,308, compared with $8,430 a week ago, but for west Mediterranean ports, the FBX spot rate edged up $74, to $7,967 per 40ft.
The modest softening …

‘Several hundred’ boxes lost overboard in new transpacific vessel casualty

The 13,092 teu Maersk Eindhoven (pictured) lost “several hundred containers overboard” as it suffered an engine blackout in bad weather yesterday, near Japan, en route from Xiamen, China to Los Angeles.
This latest box spill in the north Pacific will add urgency to a review of lashing practices on ULCVs, and could lead to an interim restriction on the height of container stacks on the route.
2M alliance partner MSC said the preliminary advice …

Shipper credulity strained after 2M’s last-minute Asia-Europe blanking

The 2M alliance has announced a further blank sailing this week from Asia to North Europe to use the vessel on another service.
The last-minute cancellation of the sailing of the 19,224 teu MSC Erica from Shanghai on 21 February is surprising, given that the ship is due at the port at 4am on Sunday in ballast and, according to a local report, is fully booked.
MSC said the omission of its Griffin-branded service was …

Zim agrees long-term charters for ten LNG boxships for alliance loop

Israeli carrier Zim has agreed 12-year charters with non-operating containership owner Seaspan for ten 15,000 teu LNG-fuelled vessels.
The ships will be constructed at the South Korean yard of Samsung Heavy Industries, which will commence deliveries in the first half of 2023.
Zim said the vessels would be deployed on the Asia-US east coast trade, where it has a vessel-sharing agreement with the 2M Alliance.

Extra services bring more congestion and vessel delay at San Pedro Bay ports

Extra loaders deployed by transpacific carriers to meet booming import demand have overwhelmed the US gateways of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
According to a survey by Alphaliner, the capacity of the 27 ships berthed and 41 at anchorage at the San Pedro Bay ports stood at a massive 579,100 teu on Monday.
The consultant calculated that the 41 ships at anchorage – some facing a wait of up to two weeks for a berth – equated to some 336,500 teu of idled …

Carriers claim ‘sliding’ services will help them recover shattered schedules

More ships are being held at departure ports in Asia for a week or more, as carriers wrestle with the recovery of their shattered schedules.
They have drawn a blank in their attempts to secure additional capacity to mitigate the impact of port congestion, and are warning shippers to expect more sailings to be delayed.
Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen told customers today the carrier’s fleet was “fully deployed and stretched beyond …

New blow for shippers as carriers announce Asia-Europe blankings for CNY

Ocean carriers are to cancel several headhaul sailings to North Europe around the Chinese New Year holiday next month.
It is a blow for beleaguered shippers that have managed, at great expense, to secure space on sailings that won’t happen.
2M partners Maersk and MSC intend to blank three advertised sailings from Asia to North Europe in weeks 5-7, including one vessel that will be allowed to ‘slide’ into the following week, …
