Check Call: Using bonded warehouses to help shippers

(GIF: GIPHY)

Tariffs for most of the world are still on pause for the next 72 days. April 10, President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs on every country except China. Container ship volume coming from China is dwindling to almost nothing as the 145% tariffs stay in place.

An alternative for shippers with a little flexibility is a bonded warehouse. Bonded warehouses essentially are warehouses where imported goods can be stored without immediately paying duties or tariffs. This...

Landstar quantifies suspected fraud event, delays Q1 report

Freight broker Landstar System announced it has delayed reporting first-quarter results as it further investigates suspected supply chain fraud that was uncovered during the last week of March. It said the event is not expected to exceed $15 million of net income before accounting for professional fees and potential insurance recoveries.

On April 2, the Jacksonville, Florida-based company cut its earnings-per-share guidance for the quarter to a range of 90 to 95 cents from $1.05 to $1.25, citing...

Check Call: Big changes coming to e-commerce imports

(GIF: GIPHY)

The days of shipping goods from China to the U.S. under the de minimis exemption might be numbered – and if you’re working with small to midsize shippers that rely on that loophole, it’s time to start prepping them.

Currently, the de minimis rule allows low-value imports (under $800) to enter the U.S. duty-free and with minimal customs friction. It’s been a huge win for e-commerce brands, direct-to-consumer sellers and just about anyone bringing in small parcels from overseas –...

Check Call: LTL stocks brace for tariff impact

(GIF: GIPHY)

The first quarter of 2025 ended March 31. Now come the first earning reports of the new year as well as guidance for the remainder of the year. The first quarter didn’t see a lot of action with tariffs. There was a brief 48 hours during which the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico were in effect, but most everything was pushed off to the last week of March or the beginning of April.

Now that tariffs are in place on imports from every country in the world, it stands to be one of the...

Check Call: Tariff watch Round 3, the big one

(GIF: GIPHY)

Another month has passed, which means it’s tariff watch again. The forever will-they won’t-they has returned. Basically everything from the March tariffs that lasted two days will still be in play. The roundup of March tariffs was 25% on Canada and Mexico, 20% on goods from China, and 10% on Canadian energy. The tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico were paused for a month as leaders negotiated a solution.

During the pause, some tariffs were introduced that would go into effect...

Determine your bottlenecks before leveraging new AI technology

With the rise of AI technology, many brokerage firms and other logistics companies are still trying to figure out what new tools they need to keep a competitive edge. As with any technological disruption, it can be difficult to distinguish legitimately helpful products from the ones that simply take advantage of the trends.

Dhruv Gupta, CEO of Drumkit, encourages brokers and 3PLs to thoroughly explore and understand their workflow bottlenecks in order to make novel AI technology work most...

Check Call: ‘Sell With a Story’ review and LTL spinoffs

(GIF: GIPHY)

This month, I’m reviewing “Sell With a Story” by Paul Smith. At its core, it’s a book about crafting stories and using previous experience to show prospective customers how you can help them in ways that align with what they’re asking.

The first step of the storytelling process is to actually listen to what the prospect needs and wants. This exercise provides a salesperson guidance on which type of story to use to help move the prospect along in the sales process.

Most of sales is...

Check Call: Broker transparency heads to court

(GIF: GIPHY)

The fight over freight broker transparency has hit the front lines again, this time in the form of a lawsuit between Total Quality Logistics and Pink Cheetah Express LLC. Pink Cheetah claims that TQL hasn’t followed the broker transparency rule in place.

The complaint centers on TQL’s alleged refusal to provide Pink Cheetah with transactional records for 15 loads hauled over the past three years, despite a Nov. 30, 2023, order from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration....
