Check Call: The broker dry spell

(GIF: GIPHY)

In 2021 it seemed like there was a new freight brokerage opening daily. When you can get away with insane margins and are making money hand over fist, it would be a mistake not to open a brokerage.

Fast forward to late 2022 and 2023, and the freight recession hits. Those new brokers haven’t been through a downturn before, and there isn’t a strong sign of the freight market returning to its glory days anytime soon, leaving some newer players to weather the storm in uncertain...

Check Call: The hope of 2024 dashed

(GIF: GIPHY)

Return to normalcy – a phrase that has been uttered repeatedly for the better part of six months. Everyone wants to know when supply chains will return to normal. 2024 was expected to be that year. A new report by the Association for Supply Chain Management and KPMG has found that despite tremendous improvements in the global supply chain community, 2024 might not be the year we return to that elusive pre-pandemic normalcy.

According to the KPMG Supply Chain Stability Index, the...

Check Call: AB5 takes a body blow

(GIF:GIPHY)

The battle over the independent contractor law in California rages on. Nicknamed AB5, the law changes how a lot of workers are classified. It matters in the transportation world because for carriers that also use owner-operators to haul freight, it classifies many of those owner-operators as employees versus independent contractors. To catch up on how we got here, check out some of the previous articles about it.

Why it matters now is that it’s back in the federal courts. After...

New York’s hottest club is nearshoring to Mexico. Well, it’s not a club but it is something everyone is talking about. Supply chain M&A in 2024

In 2020, 2021 and 2022, it seemed like every day brought an announcement of a new merger or acquisition. That made sense given that it was insanely cheap to get capital and there was more than enough to go around. Fast forward to 2023 and those announcements subsided. There are still acquisitions for capacity, growth and whatever problem needs to be solved but not nearly at the rate of 2021 and 2022.

So what is in store for 2024?

Depends whom you ask but the consensus seems to be that this...
