Silk Way West, Alaska Airlines sign Boeing freighter deals

Silk Way West Airlines, a growing cargo operator based in Azerbaijan, and Alaska Airlines on Thursday signed contracts with Boeing for two freighters apiece — but that is where the similarities ended.

Silk Way West said it will take two 777-8s, the largest plane available from Boeing (NYSE: BA) and one so modern it isn’t even being produced yet, while Alaska Airlines will use secondhand 737-800s passenger aircraft and turn them into freighters.

Cargolux, a major all-cargo airline based in Luxembourg, has finalized an order with Boeing for 10 next-generation 777-8 freighters with options for six more aircraft, the companies announced Wednesday.

The move keeps Cargolux in the Boeing camp after Airbus late last year introduced a rival large freighter based on its popular A350 widebody passenger jet, its first serious effort in years to take on Boeing (NYSE: BA) in the freighter arena after a short-lived run making A330-200s.

All Nippon Airways changes Boeing 777 order to get next-gen freighters

A white cargo jet with blue tail and ANA Cargo logo takes off.

All Nippon Airways said Monday it converted two of its 20 orders for Boeing’s next-generation 777 passenger aircraft, the 777-9, to the 777-8 cargo version, becoming the third airline to commit to the large future freighter since Boeing launched the program at the start of the year.

ANA is a large combination carrier that operates nine Boeing 767-300 medium-size freighters and two large 777 freighters, according to a March 2021 fact sheet. ANA said the new 777-8 cargo jets will enter service...
