Hurricane Rafael could hit US later this week, but impacts unclear

Hurricane Rafael is expected to take aim at the United States after making landfall in Cuba, but the storm’s possible intensity and damage to the U.S. coast remain unclear. 

Category 2 Rafael is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane before making landfall in Cuba on Wednesday but is expected to weaken as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said. 

Rafael currently has maximum sustained winds of about 100 mph.

Gulf Coast ports monitoring storm that could develop into hurricane

Ports along the Gulf Coast are monitoring a storm in the Caribbean that AccuWeather meteorologists predict will strengthen into a hurricane and hit the area on Thursday. 

The weather forecasting company predicts the storm will impact areas that were affected by Hurricane Idalia in August 2023. The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory Monday about a possible tropical cyclone for parts of Mexico and Cuba but said the storm was forecast to strengthen.

Louisiana ports quickly restore normal operations after Hurricane Francine

Louisiana ports are reporting that they sustained no major damage during Hurricane Francine.

The storm, which hit Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane on Wednesday, quickly weakened after making landfall. Ports along the coast conducted damage assessments on Thursday but reported no significant damage.

Gulf Coast ports brace for Francine as storm inches closer to Louisiana

Tropical Storm Francine is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday as a hurricane, bringing a life-threatening storm surge with it.

Ports along the Gulf Coast were monitoring the storm on Tuesday. Resilinc, a supply chain data monitoring platform, estimates that Francine will impact the aerospace, oil and manufacturing industries across nearly 11,000 sites.

AccuWeather reduces number of projected storms in Atlantic hurricane season

AccuWeather is reducing its projected number of named storms during the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season following an “unusual” August with low tropical activity. 

The Pennsylvania-based weather forecasting agency announced this week that it is downgrading its projections. Forecasters now predict that this year’s season will see 16 to 20 named storms and six to 10 hurricanes, of which three to six are expected to be major. Four to six storms are predicted to hit the United States.
