India’s Mundra Port battles congestion amid growing box volumes

Indian importers and exporters are dealing with considerable cargo delays at Mundra Port, which leads the country’s containerised trade.

Local trade sources have raised serious concerns over the congestion plaguing Mundra’s container terminals over the past few weeks.

“The terminals at Mundra now seem to be hugely congested and the pendency (backlog) has increased to levels, which is affecting normal movement of boxes between CFSs [container freight stations] and terminals,” the Container Freight...

Indian box volumes tick up despite Red Sea-linked supply chain disruption

Containerised trade through India’s major and minor private ports saw measurable traction last month, according to exclusive port data obtained by Container News.

Combined volumes hit nearly 1.9 million TEUs in February, up nearly 5% from 1.8 million TEUs in January.

Of this, Adani Group-owned Mundra Port accounted for 635,000 TEUs in February, compared with some 618,000 TEUs in the prior month.

Nhava Sheva Port (JNPA), the busiest public container handler, contributed about 565,000 TEUs, rising...

MSC-Adani terminal deal at Ennore poised to boost South India trade flow

MSC’s 49% stake acquisition in Adani Group’s container terminal at Ennore Port, also known as Kamarajar Port, has the potential to boost direct calls out of India’s southern corridor as volumes build.

Ennore is located about 15 miles north of Chennai. Maersk is the main liner customer for the Ennore terminal (AECTPL) at present, with two weekly sailings, while CMA CGM recently added a call there via its NEMO service connecting to North Europe and the Mediterranean.

Under the deal, MSC through its...

Container lines consolidate service networks out of South India as trade expands

Container lines are rapidly expanding connections out of South India to keep pace with growing trade volumes.

But the concentration of calls at private box terminals operated by Adani Group, which act as alternatives to Chennai Port, is becoming increasingly evident.

HMM has cemented its network with direct sailings out of Adani Kattupalli Port (AKPPL). Its FIM [Far East Asia-India-Mediterranean] service is a major boon for southern India shippers traditionally tethered to transshipment over Sri...

Mundra Port container volumes regain pace after slowing trends

New exclusive data collected by Container News points to a rebound in box volumes moving via Mundra Port, India’s busiest cargo hub, in November.

According to the latest figures, the four Adani Group-controlled Mundra terminals together handled 438,453 TEUs last month, versus 431,334 TEUs during October.

The private harbour also includes a DP World concession, named Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT), which handled 90,781 TEUs in November, versus 92,908 TEUs in the prior month. That...

Escalating protests threaten Indian hub port development at Vizhinjam

The Adani Group finds itself in a fix due to an escalation of protests against its under-construction container transshipment hub project at Vizhinjam, a green-field site about 10 miles southwest of Trivandrum in southern India.

The long-running unrest tied to resentments among “project-affected people,” mostly from the local fishing community, took a violent turn earlier this week, casting a shadow over Adani’s efforts to resume work at the site, which has been at a standstill for weeks.

The...
