Profits rise as Agility continues to forge ahead with digital development

Agility, which is aligning itself in the ‘digital’ forwarder category, has announced a mixed set of results for its third quarter, as challenges in the freight forwarding industry hit its logistics division.
Its Global Integrated Logistics (GIL) business saw ebitda fall 1% year on year to KWD7.8m ($25.6m), which, the company said, was down to increased operating expenses for new facilities and new digital investments.
But the biggest surprise was a 15.8% fall in …

M&A radar: Partial sale of Ceva the only certainty as deal smoke thickens

This Indian summer has brought about a slew of hot rumours and serious – and some less serious – market talk regarding deal-making that I thought it would be worth sharing in a preliminary attempt aimed at predicting what could be next in our beloved, sometimes overly cautious, industry.
What’s known
Drawing from several conversations about CMA CGM/Ceva Logistics in the past few weeks, I have concluded that we are soon going …

First quarter ‘a good start’ to the year, reports Agility Logistics

Agility Logistics today reported first-quarter pre-tax profits down 9% year on year, largely due to investments, including its digital transformation project.
The Kuwait-headquartered 3PL said ebitda for Agility Global Integrated Logistics (GIL) in the period was KD6.8m (US$22.3m) on revenues of KD275m, which represented a year-on-year decrease of 1.1%.
“GIL’s digital strategy involves the development of systems and technology that will improve productivity, differentiate its products, and...

Supply chain radar: The appeal of Geodis + Bolloré, if CMA CGM is out of the race

Whether a French revolution spurred by domestic deal-making of a certain size is the next chapter in logistics is as yet unknown.
However, speculation is rife about what’s next for Geodis, which only about ten days ago announced it had “brought its 2013–2018 strategic plan to a favourable close”, while other much smaller domestic deals are being worked out.
By the way, its 2023 plan can be found here – there is …

More M&A in forwarding likely, as major players feel the need to ‘keep up’

And so the forwarding consolidation chat continues. On Loadstar Premium today, we reveal speculation that CMA CGM, new proud owner of Ceva, is in talks with the French government over the possible acquisition of Geodis.
Geodis has said publicly it is looking for a slice of M&A action – but that it wanted to expand in Germany, the Netherlands, China and the US.
Currently owned by a French railway, could Geodis switch to being owned by a French shipping line? Is …

Dance with Panalpina ‘whetted our appetite’ for M&A, says Agility chief

Agility is in the market for a good-sized 3PL acquisition – an interest triggered by its ‘dance’ with Panalpina this year.
Essa Al-Saleh, chief executive of Agility’s GIL division, admitted he wasn’t sure whether Agility had been approached by Panalpina simply to force DSV to raise its offer, but revealed that the proposed deal had “whetted the appetite” for M&A.
“There were earnest efforts by stakeholders to pursue the deal,” he told …

Analysis: with the clock ticking, Agility faces the Bolloré temptation

Agility isn’t rocking as it did, very conveniently, when talk of a Panapina (PAN) tie-up dominated the headlines in the first quarter – that’s the key takeaway from the Q1 conference call that took place last week.
Which makes it an ideal time to boost expectations via creative financial engineering, if it seriously intends to play an active role in freight forwarding (FF)/contract logistics consolidation alongside other action currently taking place in …

Agility profits rise in first quarter to mitigate Panalpina disappointment

Agility may have reported a bounce of 4.1% in Q1 profits, but is likely to remember the period more for its failure to agree a deal with Panalpina as it looked for growth through consolidation.
For a while, it appeared the Kuwait-headquartered operator was going head-to-head with DSV for Panalpina, but on 1 April DSV won the race.
It may be that Panalpina simply used Agility to get the best price it …

Market Insight: Ocean & air freight woes – “we’re all pigs counting who’ll reach the slaughterhouse first”

A quick and dirty take at the end of the week to get across the mood out there in the ocean and air freight market circles, as the first quarter laboriously draws to a close and very few actors are genuinely looking forward to the second quarter and beyond.
In short, it’s really bad for all, carriers and freight forwarders alike, with the clouds gathering on several fronts.

Horizontal value no more?
Discussing …

Supply chain radar: Panalpina talks back – “context and culture are very different” ocean head says

After all manner of news, rumour and speculation surrounding the possible outcome of DSV’s ~ Sfr4.27bn takeover offer for Panalpina (PAN) over the past eight weeks, many of our readers requested that I challenge the Swiss 3PL’s executive management team, with particular focus on the state of affairs and the outlook for its core ocean freight business.
Well, voila! The company kindly granted me an extensive interview with head of ocean …
