Qatar Airways achieves strong cargo growth in fiscal year

Qatar Airways, the largest non-express scheduled air cargo carrier in the world, on Thursday reported a 25% increase in cargo revenue for the fiscal year ended March 31 from moving more than 3.3 million tons of goods. Volume by weight was more than double the last pre-pandemic year.

The company claims it now holds an 8% share of the cargo market, although it is unclear what the figure is based on since there are no known independent rankings for market share. Nobody was available to explain the...

Geopolitics contribute to 11% decline in air cargo demand

Workers wearing yellow vests maneuver a large freight pallet under the wing of a jetliner.

The downturn in global air cargo demand intensified during April and is outpacing the slowdown in overall international trade in goods, as the Ukraine war, strict lockdown measures in China and inflation dragged down economic activity, an aviation industry group representing most major airlines reported this week.

Meanwhile, international travel demand in the passenger segment shot up in April, especially in the trans-Atlantic market, in response to reductions in COVID border restrictions ahead...

Kuehne + Nagel 2021 earnings swell on 50% air, ocean margins

Kuehne + Nagel, the world’s largest air and sea freight forwarder by volume, was richly rewarded last year by supply chain disruptions, elevated rates and its ability to steer customer shipments through the chaos, culminating with a 300% fourth-quarter rise in operating income to $1.2 billion.

The company also announced Wednesday that it has suspended all import shipments into Russia, except for pharmaceuticals, health care and humanitarian supplies.

On a full-year basis, earnings before interest...

Omicron, weather dent air cargo growth in January

A new report shows air cargo demand was flat in January compared to last year and 2019, but the sampling of airlines’ shipment business doesn’t take into account ongoing disruptions to the air logistics system that have prevented carriers from transporting as many goods as shippers are presenting, essentially resulting in an undercount of volume.

The amount of air cargo moved by airlines last month inched up 0.1% compared to the opening month in 2021 and 0.2% versus 2019, Amsterdam-based Clive...

Airline group says global cargo volume grew 6.9% in 2021

Air cargo demand rebounded in December, growing 8.9% over the 2019 level, after a stumble in November when airlines’ throughput increased only 3.9% because of congestion at major airports, the International Air Transport Association reported Tuesday.

The strong finish left the industry with a 6.9% gain in cargo volume for the full year, with the key international sector besting 2019 by 7.4%.

Airlines in North America topped the growth chart in December, with international demand growing 20.5%...

Airport congestion blamed for peak season drop in air cargo volume

Sideview of back half of a big jet being loaded with cargo on a sunny day.

Global air cargo volumes paradoxically declined in November amid intense shipping demand during the height of the preholiday peak shipping season, yet freight rates jumped higher and planes were more full.

Blame the disconnect between a red-hot airfreight market and less cargo moved on extreme congestion at major airports, where a shortage of labor among airline service providers is slowing aircraft loading and unloading as well as freight deconsolidation of imports for pickup.

Exorbitant ocean rates, need for speed give air cargo an edge

A close up of a cargo pallet wrapped in plastic on a lift ready to go in the old of an aircraft, waiting in front of jet engine.

Increased use of airfreight by shippers trying to avoid clogged ports is adding pressure to overtaxed air capacity and sharply pushing up rates, especially out of Asia, but new data showing demand plateaued in October reinforces evidence that the traditional busy shipping season started earlier than normal.

In a panic over slower factory production due to power rationing in China and shortages of semiconductors, as well as ocean shipping backlogs that have quadrupled delivery times, more...

Airline group says cargo grew 7.7% in August

The International Air Transport Association reported Wednesday that international air cargo volumes in August grew 8.6 % compared to pre-pandemic levels, continuing a yearlong upward trend and bolstering the market narrative that demand is growing even faster in September because of the holiday shipping rush.

Counting domestic transport, the pace of growth tapered to 7.7% from 8.8% (revised) in July but remained ahead of the long-term average of 4.7% growth.

Growth in air cargo volume hits 4-year high

A white plane takes off with view facing the aircraft.

Air cargo volumes increased 9.9% in June, capping the strongest annual first half for carriers since 2017 and giving the industry momentum heading into the traditional holiday shipping season, the International Air Transport Association reported Wednesday.

The news was less sanguine for companies that ship goods and are looking for more space in a crowded market. A large portion of the lift they need comes from passenger aircraft, with cargo riding in the lower deck. Passenger capacity...
