Large, white and blue cargo jet parked in remote section of airport.

The U.S. government on Friday identified more than 85 Russian aircraft, including a dozen freighters, that have scurried back to Russia to escape sanctions imposed following the invasion of Ukraine and warned that companies assisting such flights are subject to enforcement of secondary sanctions for violating export controls.

In addition to the U.S. closure of airspace to Russian aircraft on March 1, the Commerce Department imposed stringent controls on aviation-related items destined for Russia...

The United States is closing its airspace to all Russian aircraft as punishment for invading Ukraine, President Joe Biden said in his State of the Union address to the nation Tuesday night.

“I am announcing that we will join our allies in closing off American airspace to all Russian flights — further isolating Russia — and adding an additional squeeze on their economy,” the president said.

The decision brings the U.S. in solidarity with the European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom, Nordic and...

How did Delta Airlines awaken 570 dormant aircraft?

Delta aircraft stored wing-to-wing on an airfield.

Delta Air Lines parked 571 mainline aircraft across the country in 2020 when the COVID-19 wiped out most passenger travel. Airlines still have about 70% of their pre-pandemic fleet in hibernation, but Delta is returning aircraft to the skies because the U.S. domestic market is recovering faster than in other parts of the world.

Parking a plane and bringing it back to life after months of inactivity isn’t as simple as turning the engines off and on. It takes a lot of effort, including maintenance...

Western Global Airlines asks DOT for permission to expand fleet

A white jumbo jet with blue lettering takes off with nose lifted in air.

Contract cargo operator Western Global Airlines has asked the Department of Transportation to lift the cap on the number of planes it can operate so it can expand amid favorable growth conditions for airfreight.

The Estero, Florida-based company has been operating under DOT authority for seven years, but says its profitability and safety record demonstrate it no longer needs close government monitoring. Customers include express carriers UPS (NYSE: UPS) and DHL, the Postal Service, Amazon...

Who’s UPS gonna call? Bug busters

A UPS cargo plane with giant netting system over the open cargo door to catch bugs.

It’s Japanese beetle season and UPS Airlines is in full battle mode to prevent the destructive pest from hopping on a plane for a ride out West.

Japanese beetles, which were accidentally introduced to the U.S. more than a century ago, cause massive crop and plant damage each year. They feed on the roots of grasses and foliage of more than 300 species of ornamental and agricultural plants. The insects tend to hatch in large numbers and when they congregate can quickly defoliate a plant.

A white Delta jet takes off with wheels still down.

U.S. mainline carriers are rebounding faster than others around the world, and investments in new aircraft are a sign they see recovery in their future. On Tuesday, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) announced long-term leases for seven Airbus A350-900 twin-aisle jets and the purchase of 29 used Boeing 737-900 Extended Range aircraft as travel demand picks up after a year of lockdowns and restrictions because of COVID.
