Airfreight Pulse: More capacity eases pressure on rates

Flight preparations as viewed from behind and below the tail of a big jetliner.

Airfreight rates continued to fall in July as virus-related shipments gave way to a more normal mix of commodities and beefed-up passenger schedules presented greater transport opportunities for shippers.

But there are signs the trend may not last. The ebb and flow of coronavirus containment and spread in different regions of the world presents a cautionary note against expectations the airline industry recovery will continue in a straight line without interruption, and that cargo capacity won’t...

Air cargo market: Rationality returns, but for how long?

Big silver jet with pallets of cargo next to it on the ground.

Current and lagging indicators show the air cargo market is continuing to stabilize after a three-month bubble that saw transport rates quintuple for China export routes. Despite the apparent slow-down in shipments of personal protective equipment, shortages of face masks and other medical supplies at U.S. hospitals could make the correction short-lived.

Air freight volumes are picking up as the recovery in global economic activity spurs cross-border trade in more typical goods for manufacturers...

Market watch: Air cargo frenzy dies down

Cargo on pallets waiting to get loaded on a plane.

The white-knuckle ride through the airfreight market stratosphere has ended as prices continued to fall back toward earth again last week, bringing relief to companies that purchase air transport to move their goods.

The change in conditions is best illustrated by export flows from China to the U.S. and Europe, where air rates have tumbled more than 60%, from $15 to $20 per kilogram at one point, to under $10 per kilogram, as panic-buying for personal protective equipment (PPE) gives way to...

Airfreight rates continue to normalize this month on the main trade lanes from China to the U.S. and Europe as demand softens from the peak in mid-May, according to  freight forwarders and airline analysts.

Shippers are paying about $7/kilogram outbound China to Europe, which is about 2.5 times the rate at the start of the year and similar to the price in April, data from The Air Cargo Index shows. Three or four weeks ago, rates were double or more. Rates are also down to about $5.75/kilogram...

Cargo revenues buoy airlines amid $84b loss for 2020

Airlines stand to lose more than $84 billion this year, driven by a 50% reduction in revenues, but without the boom in cargo business the industry’s predicament would be even worse, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said Tuesday in an unprecedented description of the financial tsunami crashing over the industry due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cargo typically is a small portion of the overall industry, especially for passenger-focused airlines, but not this year. Cargo revenues...

Shanghai Pudong airport continues to choke on cargo

Cargo terminal at Shanghai Airport.

Cargo terminals at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport remain extremely congested, but logistics companies responsible for getting shipments from their customers and on planes say the flood of freight trapped in warehouses is slowly beginning to recede.

“There are some green shoots of progress,” Neel Jones Shah, global head of airfreight at tech-enabled forwarder Flexport, said in an interview. “Some backlogs have been worked through. We’re getting a little bit of clearance in our own...
