East, Gulf Coast ports smash records in 2021

The year 2021 proved to be a banner year for ports on the East and Gulf coasts as consumer demand remained brisk amid the waxing and waning COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 ‘most productive year’ at Port of Virginia

The Port of Virginia in Norfolk handled more than 3.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2021, a 25.2% increase from 2020, at a time when the broader supply chain faced pandemic-related headwinds, according to Virginia Port Authority CEO and Executive Director Stephen A. Edwards.

$231M rail project to connect Port of Mobile to central Alabama

Alabama officials announced Tuesday plans for a 280-mile rail initiative to enable more efficient transport to and from the Port of Mobile — the state’s only seaport. Norfolk Southern is funding more than 50% of the project.

State officials said the $231.6 million A-USA Corridor could help improve the nation’s supply chain, along with attracting more manufacturing, warehousing and distribution facilities to Alabama.

“Creating good port access to central Alabama is a key part of this initiative,...

CSX and NS: Amtrak didn’t track Gulf Coast service impact

A photograph of an Amtrak train.

The Surface Transportation Board should not be swayed by the political winds that appear to support Amtrak’s ambitions when it comes to restoring passenger rail service between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, attorneys representing CSX and Norfolk Southern said recently.

“This board is not a political rubber stamp. It is an independent arbiter required to neutrally apply the statute in a way that balances the interests of all stakeholders. And here Congress has made clear that Amtrak is not...

CSX, Norfolk Southern want Amtrak’s Gulf Coast service proposal denied

CSX and Norfolk Southern want the Surface Transportation Board to deny Amtrak’s request to restore Gulf Coast service next year if Amtrak doesn’t agree to pay for infrastructure improvements that would ensure passenger service wouldn’t cause significant delays for freight rail.

CSX owns the tracks that Amtrak would use to go between New Orleans and Mobile in Alabama. Amtrak would also need access to NS’ track and infrastructure. By law, freight trains must give Amtrak priority when they share...

Box volumes at the Port of Mobile continue upward trend

Containerised cargo volumes continue to climb at the Port of Mobile in Alabama during September, due in part to cargo shifts into uncongested gateways servicing key North American markets.

Container volume through the port marked its third-highest lift in September delivering a 27% year-to-date increase in volume over the same period last year. At the same time, the refrigerated container sector continued its robust pace in September posting the second-highest volumes in 2021.

Port of Mobile ‘expects growth will remain constant’

The Port of Mobile in Alabama, boosted by a jump in refrigerated containers, reported a 34% year-over-year increase in cargo volume during the month of August.

Refrigerated containers posted a 37% year-over-year increase as more goods were shipped to Mobile as part of the global cold cargo supply chain.

The port also recently added Asian vessel calls as more shippers seek uncongested gateways servicing North American markets such as Memphis, Tennessee, and Chicago, Beth Branch, chief commercial...

Congressional earmark aims to expand Port of Mobile container markets

The resurrection of earmarks in Congress after a 10-year absence could become a boon for the Port of Mobile and its intermodal partners.

A project submitted by Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., under the new “Community Project Funding” rule approved by lawmakers earlier this year would create an intermodal transfer facility in Montgomery, Alabama.

Sewell’s $2 million funding request would be used to purchase land for the project, located just south of Montgomery adjacent to a CSX [NASDAQ: CSX] rail line...

A photograph of an Amtrak train traveling through an open field.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is supporting efforts to bring Amtrak service to the Gulf Coast, acknowledging the challenges that stakeholders have had in reaching a consensus over infrastructure and operational needs.

A Monday letter from DOT, representing the interests of the agency as well as the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), asks the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to “give careful and prompt consideration” to Amtrak’s request to provide daily service in 2022 between...
