Alaska Air changes cargo leaders in wake of Hawaiian merger

Alaska Airlines on Monday announced a leadership change in its cargo division one week after finalizing the acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, adding expertise in areas such as international cargo operations and widebody freighter aircraft that are new for the airline and critical to support the flying service for Amazon it inherited.

DOT approves $1.9B Alaska Air, Hawaiian merger

Alaska Airlines expects to finalize its $1.9 billion merger with Hawaiian Airlines on Wednesday after the Department of Transportation cleared the transaction, the company said in a regulatory filing Tuesday.

DOT approval was the remaining hurdle for the merger. The Department of Justice last month quietly approved the transaction.

The combination of Alaska Airlines (NYSE: ALK) and Hawaiian Airlines (NASDAQ: HA) is important from a freight perspective because Alaska will take over cargo...

Boeing quality issue delays Alaska Airlines’ converted freighters

Unspecified problems with two used aircraft that recently were converted by Boeing to carry cargo have forced Alaska Airlines to open a new freighter service to Los Angeles with smaller Boeing 737-700s from its existing fleet.

The service is designed to streamline Alaska’s supply chain since many of the groceries, household goods and medicine shipped into the state come from Southern California. It is the first time Alaska Airlines’ freighters have flown beyond Alaska and Seattle.

Alaska Air...

Alaska Airlines to expand freighter service to Los Angeles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Alaska Airlines will take advantage of two new Boeing 737-800 converted freighters to open its first dedicated cargo service south of Seattle, starting in April, said Adam Drouhard, managing director for cargo.

Los Angeles will be the newest market for the freighters, which currently don’t fly beyond Seattle in the Lower 48 states.

Alaska Air will take over cargo transportation for e-commerce giant Amazon when it concludes a deal announced Sunday to acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a stock-and-debt transaction worth $1.9 billion. Whether the Amazon transportation services agreement is eventually modified is unclear, but Alaska’s CEO said it could spur further investment in freighters.

Flight attendants’ legal win in California could impact air cargo

A white jet with aqua tail and Alaska Air logo flies high into a blue sky, as seen from the side rear.

WASHINGTON — A cargo industry official is calling on Congress to guard against state interference in airfreight operations following a recent court ruling in favor of California-based flight attendants at Alaska Airlines.

The U.S. Supreme Court last summer refused to hear Alaska Airlines’ appeal of a lower court ruling that a state’s wage laws apply to airline employees because they only have an indirect impact on airline services. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the carrier had to...
