Pilotage Claims Surpass US$1.8b in the Last Two Decades

Claims arising from incidents involving vessels under pilotage have exceeded US$ 1.8 billion in the 20 years between 1999 and 2019, reports data by the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG Clubs).

In a new report, IG Clubs records 1,046 such incidents in this period and each incident gave rise to P&I liabilities in excess of US$ 100,000.

NTSB releases findings regarding McAllister tug and bulk carrier

The National Transportation Safety Board issued Marine Accident Brief 20/37 recently for its investigation of the Sept. 23, 2019, accident involving the tugboat G.M. McAllister and the NGL Energy Partners wharf on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, near Chesapeake, Va.

No injuries or pollution were reported in connection with the accident. Damage to the wharf was estimated at $1.47 million.

USACE dredge hits bridge, tender vessel sinks

On April 21, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District’s dredge Jadwin allided with the Highway 190 bridge pier in Baton Rouge, La. As a result of the allision, the Jadwin’s tender M/V Sanderford capsized and sank.

In addition to supporting the U.S. Coast Guard in its data collection investigation of the incident, the Corps is conducting its own comprehensive safety review, both of which will help to determine the cause of the allision.

USCG closes Mississippi River after vessel allision with bridge

The US Coast Guard has closed the Mississippi River between mile markers 115 and 122, after a vessel allided with the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, the ITV Cooperative Spirit, allided with the bridge while pushing 29 grain barges downriver.

Watchstanders at USCG Sector New Orleans received a report of the incident at approximately 1:30 a.m.

No injuries, pollution or damage to the bridge occurred.

Lessons learned: Heavy contact with quay while berthing

In its latest Safety Digest, UK MAIB describes a case of a container ship allision with the quay while berthing which injured ten people and caused significant damage.
