U.S. ports generate $2.9 trillion in economic activity, study finds

Just last week, the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the unified voice of more than 80 United States ports, released its 2024 Port and Maritime Industry Economic Impact Report.

“One out of every eight jobs and almost $2.9 trillion in GDP means that we simply cannot begin to imagine our world without American ports,” said Cary S. Davis, AAPA president and CEO. “In spite of a perfect storm of challenges, including a pandemic, major macro-economic and geostrategic pressures, and...

Ports get $48.4 million piece of $1.8 billion RAISE grants pie

Port projects are to receive $48.4 million of $1.8 billion of grants awarded June 28 under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. As in years past, the demand for RAISE funding outpaced available funds, with the DOT receiving almost $13 billion in requests for the $1.8 billion available this year.

The awards were welcomed by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA).

“These port infrastructure projects...

DOT confirms boost in West Coast container imports

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration announced on Wednesday it is gaining ground on its ability to help importers and container vessel operators navigate shifts in freight flows with new information it is publishing from inland rail terminals and warehouses.

The increase in timely ocean container import data being supplied by private industry into the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Freight Logistics Optimizations Works (FLOW) initiative confirms what has been predicted since earlier in the...

Ports call out ‘sensationalized’ targeting of foreign container cranes

WASHINGTON — Legislation that could shut down a port’s container operations for an alleged security risk is misleading and misguided, according to the American Association of Port Authorities.

The Port Crane Security and Inspection Act of 2023, introduced Wednesday by U.S. Reps. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., and John Garamendi, D-Calif., would require federal authorities to inspect cranes and the software used to operate them if they were manufactured in countries considered adversaries of the U.S. —...

What do seaport executives expect for the rest of 2023?

WASHINGTON — With the first quarter of 2023 officially in the books, U.S. seaports want to know what the rest of the year holds as they prepare for what they hope will be a fall peak shipping season.

A panel of port executives who gathered here this week for the American Association of Port Authorities’ annual legislative summit (this year’s moniker, “Strong Ports. Strong America.”) attempted to answer that question.

“If you’re looking at current volumes coming through, we’re definitely...

Ocean Shipping Reform Act passes Senate

The bipartisan Ocean Shipping Reform Act, cosponsored by U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D.-Minn.,) and John Thune (R.-S.D.) has passed the Senate by a voice vote.

The legislation aims to help fix supply chains and ease shipping backlogs.

“Congestion at ports and increased shipping costs pose unique challenges for U.S. exporters, who have seen the price of shipping containers increase four-fold in just two years, raising costs for consumers and hurting our businesses,” said Klobuchar. “Meanwhile,...

Rating Secretary Pete: Infrastructure boom or supply chain bust?

National exposure as a presidential candidate in the 2020 presidential election made Pete Buttigieg probably the most well-known U.S. transportation secretary in history when he was sworn in on Feb. 3, 2021.

He joined the Biden administration just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to wreak havoc on domestic supply chains, while at the same time President Biden was under pressure to deliver on a main pillar upon which his campaign was built: a transformational transportation infrastructure...

Feds to provide $230 million to speed cargo through ports

Despite reports to the contrary, shelves are stocked for the holidays.

That was the message hammered home on Wednesday, three days before Christmas, by President Joe Biden’s Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force.

“We’re making real and sustained progress at the ports — there’s increased fluidity and velocity in the goods movement,” John Porcari, the task force’s port envoy, told the president and other meeting attendees at the White House. Container dwell times at the ports of Los Angeles and Long...
