International Windship Association launches new survey to gauge perception of low/zero emission vessels and wind propulsion technology

London, 26th February 2025: With the number of ships using direct wind energy for propulsion increasing at a rate of knots, perceptions of wind propulsion technology are seemingly changing in the shipping industry, a sector which, until the middle of the 19th Century, relied solely on sail.

The potential of wind energy to rapidly decarbonise the shipping industry by enabling the realisation of low or zero emission vessels is well-known. However, barriers to the large-scale adoption of wind...

Anemoi completes world’s largest yet rotor sail retrofit

Anemoi rotor sails

Anemoi Marine Technologies has completed the installation of five of its rotor sails on the 400,000 dwt very large ore carrier (VLOC) Sohar Max. Built in 2012 at China’s Rongsheng shipyard, the first generation Valemax is the largest vessel to receive wind assisted propulsion system (WAPS) technology to date.

Vale goes for world’s largest wind propulsion installation yet

The project showcased global collaboration between the vessel’s charterer, Brazilian mining giant Vale S.A., Omani shipowner...

Anemoi names Clare Urmston its new CEO

Rotor sail specialist Anemoi Marine Technologies has named Clare Urmston as its new chief executive officer (CEO). After holding a number of executive and non-executive positions within the manufacturing, healthcare and consumer goods sectors, Urmston joined Anemoi in March 2020 as its chief financial officer and, in May 2024, became chief operating officer as part of the company’s growth into Asia.

She replaces Kim Diederichsen who is stepping down as CEO after more than five years in the role.

Berge Bulk puts Anemoi rotor sails on a Valemax

Berge Bulk ship fitted with Anemoi rotor sails

Singapore-headquartered Berge Bulk reports that its 388,000 dwt Valemax ore carrier Berge Neblina is now en route to Brazil fitted with four Anemoi rotor sails. Each is 35 meters tall and has a 5 meters diameter. The rotor sails are integrated with a folding deployment system that allows them to lay flat to mitigate impact on air draft and cargo handling operations when in port.

By harnessing wind energy, Berge Neblina will be able to reduce the load on the main engine while maintaining speed,...

Vale goes for world’s largest wind propulsion installation yet

Wind propulsion installation includes folding rotor sails

In the latest example of how leading charterers are pushing shipping decarbonization forward, Brazilian mining giant Vale S.A. is to install five rotor sails from London-headquartered Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd onboard the 400,000 dwt very large ore carrier (VLOC) Sohar Max. Owned by Oman-headquartered Asyad, the ship is a Valemax size vessel. These are the world’s largest ore carriers and Anemoi says this will be the world’s largest wind propulsion installation thus far.
