OFAC sanctions a third tanker captain in new move against Houthi enablers

Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury designated the captains of two Houthi-linked tankers, both Indian nationals, in its moves against the Houthis. Now, Vyacheslav Salyga, a 53-year old Ukrainian national, has become the third tanker captain to be designated by OFAC sanctions targeting Houthi weapons procurement and funding networks.

White House: Houthis to be designated as terrorists again

Against the backdrop of continued Houthi attacks on merchant shipping, the White House announced today that the Iranian-backed group (formally known as Ansarallah) will be designated as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist.”

The group had previously been designated as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” on January 19, 2021, but was delisted on February 16, 2021, as the designation was then seen as impeding the flow of humanitarian aid to Yemen.
