APM Terminals Mobile announces $60M rail expansion plan

APM Terminals Mobile has begun a $60 million rail expansion project that “doubles capacity for customers” at the Port of Mobile, Alabama.

The terminal is adding 12,000 feet of tracks, as well as additional rail yard storage space and container capacity. The project will also improve access to the Port of Mobile.

APM Terminals Mobile has decided to invest around US$60 million in the expansion of its rail infrastructure capabilities.

Specifically, Maersk-owned port operator plans to develop additional tracks, rail yard storage space and improved access from the berth to the railyard. APM Terminals said the new project is expected to enhance the US terminal’s productivity, safety and supply chain speed.

APM Terminals Mobile to expand by 130,000m²

APM Terminals Mobile in the United States has signed an agreement with the Alabama State Port Authority to add 129,499m² to the current container terminal yard.

The terminal is already 542,278m² and with this increase, it will keep pace with future demand, creating a capacity of one million TEU that has been approved to handle ships of 14,000 TEU capacity.

Port of Mobile box volumes could surpass 500,000TEU in 2021

The Port of Mobile in Alabama has seen outstanding growth in containerised cargo volumes from the beginning of the year until August as shippers seek uncongested gateways servicing key markets in the northern United States.

Particularly, the Port of Mobile has handled 327,003TEU during the first eight months of the year, which translates to an increase of 27% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Mobile terminal touts import access to coveted Midwest destinations

APM Terminals Mobile in Alabama is putting a spotlight on its freight rail capacity to handle imported goods from the Gulf Coast to Chicago and other popular Midwestern destinations.

Congressional earmark aims to expand Port of Mobile container markets

The resurrection of earmarks in Congress after a 10-year absence could become a boon for the Port of Mobile and its intermodal partners.

A project submitted by Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., under the new “Community Project Funding” rule approved by lawmakers earlier this year would create an intermodal transfer facility in Montgomery, Alabama.
