Asset-based logistics: A freight agent’s competitive advantage

On paper, a freight agent’s job seems simple: Provide shippers with stable access to capacity and connect carriers with stable access to freight.

In an environment as volatile as today’s, freight agents are constantly battling to maintain great customer relationships and contracted freight — their bread...

Never miss out on detention time reimbursement again

In the trucking industry, one of the most valuable resources is time.

There is a reason for the saying, “If the wheels ain’t turning, you ain’t earning.” Because of the steep operating costs for a single semi-truck, lost hours of productivity greatly impact margins over time.

One way that time is often utilized inefficiently, which is out of the control of a driver or carrier, is long detention times — or when trucks are waiting to be loaded or unloaded at shipping and delivery sites.

How broker agents can endure a soft freight market

In a soft freight market, one big challenge brokers face is securing new contracts at favorable rates.

Today’s market conditions, in which capacity is loose and rates are low, mean shippers have the advantage when it comes to pricing power.

“Right now everyone’s just very, very hungry because there is additional capacity in the marketplace, but those that have those relationships with customers are the ones that still have the freight at the end of the day,” said Brian AuBuchon, vice president...

Partnering with an asset-based carrier gives broker agents a leg-up on the competition

Just as a flood of small carriers entered the trucking industry in recent years, the freight brokerage sector has been gaining momentum — and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.

“The sheer number of non-asset brokers out there is phenomenal,” Brian AuBuchon, vice president of logistics at Artur Express, said. “In the last few years, it’s swelled exponentially.”

The numbers agree. According to FrieghtWaves’ 10-year model, traditional freight brokerage gross revenue is predicted to...
