Aggressive carriers ‘biting the hand that feeds them’ as importers shun China

There are growing signs that the sky-high freight prices on the Asia-Europe trades may be beginning to structurally undermine it, as European importers begin to look for alternatives to sourcing from China.
Keith Gaskin, group commercial director of Seko Logistics in the UK, said: “I am seeing importers in the UK and Europe actively telling their merchandisers to look for near-shoring solutions, because the freight rates from Asia have reached such …

ONE profits surf the wave of soaring freight rates, with Q3 revenue up 29%

Japanese ocean carrier ONE recorded a net profit of $944m for its third quarter, October-December, and expects to see profits of $2.5bn for the full year.
That would represent an astonishing 172% upgrade on its November guidance, thanks to huge hikes in freight rates hitting the carrier’s bottom line.
Moreover, it would appear that ONE is being conservative with its $900m net profit Q4 forecast for January to March, given the impact …

Container trade ‘madness’ driving more Asia cargo to other modes

The “madness” of ex-Asia container rates is driving more un-boxing of containerised cargo.
And the resulting bounceback for breakbulk is providing a boon for secondary ports and shortsea shipping, according to chartering specialist Ahlers.
“New opportunities are arising for breakbulk, MPVs [multipurpose vessels] and ro-ro carriers,” the company said.
“Alongside some bigger MPVs being chartered for carrying containers, there is an increase in cargo volumes due to more containerised cargo coming...

Capacity shortages on Asia-Europe directly due to transpacific trade boom

There is growing evidence that capacity restrictions on the Asia-Europe ocean trades, in terms of both vessels and equipment, are a direct result of the transpacific demand boom.
According to new research from liner consultancy Sea-Intelligence, recent capacity injections on the transpacific are expected to limit the ability of carriers to bring more slots and containers to the Asia-North Europe trade.
Sea-Intelligence’s latest Trade Capacity Outlook data suggest planned capacity growth on …
