Call for review of ‘vexatious’ NI Protocol after problems with customs checks

Suspending checks on animal and food items crossing the Irish Sea has exposed failings in the Northern Ireland Protocol, with calls for an urgent overhaul of the agreement.
The Northern Ireland parliament in Stormont announced on Tuesday that Brexit checks on animal and food products crossing from Great Britain into Northern Ireland had been suspended after an “upsurge in sinister and menacing behaviour in recent weeks”.
Chairman of customs consultancy ASM Peter …

‘A handful of customs clerks is not enough to prevent post-Brexit traffic chaos’

The UK government has “seriously underestimated” the operability of post-Brexit customs, with the long-term effects being compared to “self-imposed sanctions”.
Forwarder John Shirley said there was a chronic level of understaffing in customs clerk roles, which he did not believe would become clear until the transition period ends on 31 December, he wrote on University College London’s Europe Blog.
“Just a minority of forwarders retain customs clerks in the EU, all of …

Money to be made as Brexit creates the ‘world’s most effective border”

The Brexit market is picking up, and there’s money to be made from what is being billed as the “world’s most effective border”.
But this will be from 2025 – it certainly won’t become the world’s most effective border on 1 January 2021.
The UK government claims to be trying (as it did, for example, with the failed ‘world-beating’ track and trace app for Covid), and it has now launched a consultation …

Whitehall unveils Brexit border operating model – but the tech may prove tricky

The UK logistics industry has welcomed more clarity in the government’s new border operating model, but has warned that many details are still lacking, making the timeframes “extremely challenging”.
The 206-page document, published yesterday, outlines protocols for borders and differing commodities, but a lot relies on new technology, which is either not completed or not currently compatible with industry systems.
However, the British International Freight Association (BIFA) welcomed an...

Whitehall’s new customs agent academy? ‘It’s all smoke and mirrors’

The freight industry has raised serious doubts over the announcement last month by UK minister Michael Gove of a new “customs agent academy”.
Mr Gove said the government was talking to the forwarding industry about a new academy, but when questioned by The Loadstar, the Cabinet Office declined to give any details.
UK forwarding association BIFA told The Loadstar: “It’s a bit odd that, if such talks are taking place, the trade …

No-deal Brexit ‘simplified customs’ plan ‘won’t help forwarders or hauliers’

Hauliers and forwarders believe that in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the UK government’s simplified customs process will make no difference to the threat of delays at the Dover crossing.
HMRC noted yesterday that its Transitional Simplified Procedures (TSP) for customs “will make importing easier for an initial period of one year, should we leave the EU without a deal, to allow businesses time to prepare for usual import processes”.
It said: “Once businesses …

Logistics industry urges UK to prevent disorderly Brexit but vows to “clear up the mess”

The logistics industry has called on the UK government to ensure continued free trade and no “disorderly” exit from the EU, after politicians last night rejected the Brexit deal put forward by prime minister Theresa May.
Ms May, who lost by 230 votes, now has just three days in which to come up with a plan B, while also fighting a vote of ‘no confidence’ in parliament.
Forwarders have today urged the government to avoid a no-deal …
