Cellphone use blamed for Ever Forward grounding

A Coast Guard investigation has determined that the pilot guiding the Ever Forward out of Maryland’s Craighill Channel in March spent much of the voyage taking personal phone calls rather than focusing on getting the container ship out to sea. 

The 1,095-foot-long Evergreen Marine Corp. ship was carrying 4,964 containers when it grounded on March 13 after departing from the Port of Baltimore bound for Norfolk, Virginia. The Ever Forward was not freed until April 17.

Gladding-Hearn building another pilot boat for Maryland

The Association of Maryland Pilots has ordered its fourth Chesapeake Class launch from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corp. Delivery is scheduled for December 2020.

Since the Chesapeake Class pilot boat was introduced by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard in 2003, 21 have been delivered to 11 pilot associations throughout the U.S.

Gladding-Hearn building new class of pilot boat for Maryland

The Association of Maryland Pilots has ordered a new class of pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corp. Called the “Baltimore Class” after the pilots’ base of operations at the Port of Baltimore, the vessel’s delivery is scheduled for April 2021.

The 48’6″x15.6’x4′ all-aluminum pilot boat will feature the Ray Hunt Design deep V hull. It will be powered by twin Volvo Penta D13, EPA Tier 3-compliant diesel engines, each delivering 600 hp at 1,900 rpm with a top speed of 29 knots....
