Loaded and Rolling: Small fleets and owner-operators gain market share

Small fleets and owner-operators gain market share

(Source: FreightWaves SONAR)

In an article published Tuesday, FreightWaves CEO and founder Craig Fuller made a case that the trucking industry is not consolidating anytime soon. The prevailing wisdom following the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 was that there would be rapid consolidation as previously highly regulated unionized trucking companies, operating under the older regulations from the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), went bankrupt and...

Yellow stares down the precipice

Negotiations between the Teamsters union and Yellow Corp. remain ongoing, with the fate of the nation’s third-largest LTL carrier hanging in the balance. Yellow is facing stiff resistance from the Teamsters over proposed operational changes that would consolidate operations between purchased regional carriers New Penn and Holland and integrate them into Yellow’s nationwide network.

Regarding the impact to the union, FreightWaves’ T...

Loaded and Rolling: Driverless truck exemptions; ATRI on driver-facing cameras

To cone or not to cone? Autonomous vehicle makers ask the question

(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)

Trucking safety advocates are at odds with corporate-backed attempts at implementing a roadside safety exemption for autonomous trucks. For those unaware, current regulations require drivers to use three emergency reflective triangles, or at least six fusees or three liquid-burning road flares, if they stop on the road for reasons other than traffic.

FreightWaves’ John Gallagher noted earlier in...

How has state marijuana legalization affected trucking?

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is asking carriers a series of questions on safety and other concerns in relation to state-level marijuana legalization.

In 2019, ATRI released a study on recreational marijuana laws’ possible effects on the trucking industry. At the time, 11 states had legalized marijuana. Since then, that number has nearly doubled to 20, prompting the new study.

The original study specifically looked at safety issues brought on by an increase in passenger...

Integrating younger adults into trucking careers — Taking the Hire Road

Amid the well-known driver shortage, industry experts have mentioned making specific strides toward recruiting the younger generation, adults 18 to 25, into trucking careers.

A recent American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) report outlines the best practices for luring and retaining young drivers.

Count Alex Leslie, research analyst with ATRI, as a believer in this newfound prioritization of the recruitment of younger employees.

“We have an aging driver workforce, with the majority of...

Trucking fuel costs and retail pump prices aren’t marching in lockstep

Even as the cost of diesel is a topic of endless concern and discussion in the trucking sector, an annual release of cost data from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) reports can be seen as showing that that the all-in cost of fuel for truckers is set by factors other than the price at the pump.

ATRI, the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, released its report last week. The report is separate from the driver pay report released by ATA on the same day.

While...
