Aurora, Continental and Nvidia announce partnership at CES

The race to deploy autonomous trucks at scale picked up speed as Aurora Innovation, Continental and Nvidia recently announced a long-term partnership to deploy driverless trucks at scale. The announcement came at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and followed a keynote address by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during which he rolled out the latest Blackwell AI chips.

The industry-first partnership came on the heels of Aurora and Continental reaching a key development milestone last year, when...

Aurora going the distance, adding 600-mile autonomous route in Texas

Aurora Innovation has added a 600-mile autonomous route between Fort Worth and El Paso, Texas, testing its Aurora Driver Beta 2.0 lane on the middle leg between Atlanta and Los Angeles, one of the nation’s busiest commercial freight thoroughfares.

The new-generation Peterbilt Model 579 trucks, still supervised by human safety drivers, are equipped with the second release of Aurora’s integrated hardware and autonomy system recently revealed in Aurora’s Toyota Sienna ride-hailing test fleet in...

This autonomous ride-along was boring — and that’s a good thing

PALMER, Texas — Successful autonomous trucking runs have nothing in common. As in nothing happens that the robot driver cannot handle as intended. That includes knowing to slow down for the man who occasionally walks his dog along Interstate 45 south of Dallas.

Aurora Innovation’s autonomous trucks have seen the man and the dog before and the robot Aurora Driver systems learned to brake almost imperceptibly, obeying the Texas law to shift one lane to the left or reduce its speed by 20 mph.

“The...

Aurora closes in on production version of self-driving truck technology

Aurora Innovation developed a Level 4 autonomous truck back in 2018, but it didn’t really focus on commercial vehicles until 2020. Now, with Volvo and Peterbilt in line for its self-driving system, Aurora is closing in on a production-intent version.

The Mountain View, California-based company is making the most of its own Aurora Driver system and using Uber ATG software it acquired in December as part of Uber’s $400 million investment in exchange for 26% equity. For years, Aurora and Uber ATG...
