Sea Machines names new marketing VP

The autonomous vessel technology developer Sea Machines has hired Don Black as vice president of sales and marketing, with responsibility for global sales of the Boston-based company’s autonomous and remote control products for workboats.

Black reports to Sea Machines founder and CEO Michael G. Johnson, and also has special oversight for supporting development of the company’s advanced perception and navigation assistance technology for commercial ships and vessels.

Boeing wins $43 million contract for autonomous submarines

The Navy has awarded Boeing Co. a $43 million contract to build four 51’ unmanned submarines, capable of ocean-crossing autonomous navigation for military missions.

The Orca Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (XLUUVs) will be based on Boeing’s Echo Voyager, an autonomous diesel-electric submarine that has demonstrated a top speed of 9 knots and capability to dive to 11,000’ depth.
