Robin Hutcheson discusses priorities for FMCSA

FMCSA Administrator Robin Hutcheson

Last month Robin Hutcheson was confirmed as the seventh administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, but she has been leading the agency since January after acting administrator Meera Joshi left to become a deputy mayor of New York City.

It has been a busy year for Hutcheson since then. Barely a week after she took the wheel at FMCSA, the U.S. Department of Transportation rolled out its National Roadway Safety Strategy, an agency-wide initiative aimed at tackling road...

Robot trucks get their own safety inspection treatment

Cop inspecting autonomous truck

Robot trucks are getting their own Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance inspections because, well, they are not like other trucks.

It took years of work by commercial motor vehicle inspectors, state highway patrols, inspection and enforcement experts, motor carriers, autonomous truck developers and government officials to develop standards to inspect trucks with automated driving systems.

FMCSA to recruit truck drivers for autonomous vehicle study

truck with autonomous driving systems

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is calling on 100 truck drivers to participate in an experiment using a simulator to evaluate distractions that occur while driving trucks equipped with lower-level autonomous technology.

The research, which will also include a non-simulator training study session, will assess driver readiness when assuming control of a truck with Level 2 (L2) and Level 3 (L3) autonomous driving systems (ADS) and develop a driver-distraction training program,...

Why does California lag in autonomous freight commercialization testing?

Back in 2012, California adopted legislation, rules of the road so to speak, for the operation of autonomous vehicles on Golden State roadways. It took three more years, until 2015, for implementing regulations to follow.

No rules covered the hauling of autonomous freight — specifically trucks exceeding 10,001 pounds because they didn’t exist. The inspection regime for trucks was another reason. The California Highway Patrol needed to be consulted, so the issue was put off.

It may slowly be...
