Damen’s Invasave Ready To Help Vessel Owners In Time For BWM Convention Deadline

InvaSave doing what it does best - treating non-complaint ballast water

The InvaSave mobile ballast water treatment system from Damen Green Solutions has demonstrated beyond doubt its capability to help ships meet the incoming D2 standard. All vessels will be required to comply with the standard which came into force on September 8th this year.

This summer the InvaSave crew teamed up with local service provider Tradebe Santander (Tradebe Company) to receive ballast water from a tanker in Gijon. What appears to be a simple exercise has significant ramifications for...

IMO Addresses Bioinvasions – GloFouling Project Sets To Work In The Pacific

Addressing bioinvasions - GloFouling project sets to work in the Pacific

In a spate of activity since its formal launch in March, the initial phase of the Glofouling Partnerships project is now well and truly underway with a series of technical workshops in the Pacific. The key message delivered to participants was that once introduced, marine invasive species can be hard to eradicate – and invasive species represent a potential major threat to the Pacific Ocean’s biodiversity and the ecological integrity of Small Island Developing States. The GEF-UNDP-IMO...

Cement Carrier Flooding Highlights Ballasting Risks

Operators that fail to properly monitor ballasting operations risk catastrophic flooding reports, Marine Propulsion.

What happened?

The failure to close a valve to the aft peak ballast tank onboard the CSL Australia-owned 15,999 dwt cement carrier Goliath during ballasting resulted in water leaking into a holed scupper line which drained into the steering gear room bilge well, causing the steering gear room to flood to a depth of around 10cm.

The vessel reached its original destination of...

The Coast Guard has published a Final Rule eliminating the requirement for certain vessels that operate on voyages within a single Captain of the Port zone to submit an Annual Ballast Water Summary Report for 2018.

The Coast Guard views this current reporting requirement as unnecessary in order to analyze and understand ballast water management (BWM) practices. This final rule will reduce the administrative burden on this regulated population of U.S. non-recreational vessels equipped with...
