Updated scrubber discharges ban in ports

According to IMO, exhaust gas scrubbers are a compliant method to reduce vessels’ sulphur emissions and ensuring compliance with MARPOL Annex VI. Yet, some coastal states and ports have implemented local regulations with stricter measures that either restrict or prohibit the discharge of washwater from open loop scrubbers or prohibit the use of scrubbers, according to Gard.

Following the recent update on scrubber discharges bans in ports, Gard informs of additional countries that have banned or...

Overview of scrubber discharges bans in ports: Update

While scrubbers are an attractive means of compliance with the IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap, equivalent to low-sulphur fuels, a recent surge in bans of open loop scrubbers in major ports worldwide seems to open new discussions, creating misconceptions surrounding the true environmental impact of these systems.

Although IMO’s EGCS Guidelines have established washwater discharge and monitoring criteria to safeguard against environmental damage, some coastal states and ports have implemented local...

China to extend open loop scrubbers ban

China’s maritime authority has issued a draft plan extending a ban on wash water discharge from open-loop scrubbers to more coastal regions from 2020. The ban follows an earlier restriction imposed in January 2019 on discharges from open-loop scrubbers in key emission control regions.

Following a months-long debate, China eventually implemented the ban within key emission control areas (ECAs), including the main channel of the Yangtze River, the Xijiang River, the Bohai sea region and ports...

Nordic American Tankers: Scrubbers an unnecessary risk

In an event in late February, Bermuda-based Nordic American Tankers Ltd (NAT) reiterated that scrubbers are not a solution for the company, in view of the 2020 sulphur cap, and it will ‘not take on risk it does not have to’.

An increased number of ports now prohibit or impose strict requirements on the use of scrubbers, which purify emissions from large ships. The scrubber cleans the exhaust from vessels for sulphur and emit impure water into the sea, and that is what the ports now will put an...
