More inland terminals join Dutch NWCC cargo co-operation initiative to beat delays

Dutch inland waterway container terminals are consolidating volumes to improve efficiency, with several joining the newly established North West Central Corridor (NWCC).
Spearheaded by TMA Logistics, CTU Utrecht and VCL Velsen, the NWCC bundles cargoes to improve capacity utilisation of inland vessels and cut waiting times at Rotterdam’s deepsea terminals.
This week, the CTU Lelystad, HOV Harlingen and Hasselt’s Westerman Multimodal Logistics terminals announced they would be joining the...

No easing of Europe’s barge congestion, despite upgraded traffic system

Delays of more than a day are still plaguing northern Europe’s inland waterways after attempts to address the issues failing to have an impact.
Last May, the port of Antwerp announced an upgraded barge traffic system (BTS) as it sought to alleviate the congestion that had gripped it and Rotterdam for more than two years.
One source today told The Loadstar the new BTS had failed to deliver the expected improvements.
“This is not …

DHL Express to make a splash with delivery option using Thames barges

DHL Express is targeting a roll-out of delivery barges on the Thames this year, as part of its “go green” strategy.
Chief executive John Pearson confirmed to The Loadstar the company’s UK division was working on a scheme similar to that in Amsterdam.

Sewerage project shows how the Thames could again be a major cargo route

London is facing the perfect opportunity to revitalise the Thames’s reputation as a working river that can be a viable alternative to the city’s gridlocked roads for cargo transport.
At Intermodal Europe in Rotterdam this month, freight and fleet project manager at Transport for London (TFL), Peter Binham, said a new sewerage system being constructed in London sets a good example of this.
“More than 7m tonnes of cargo are being moved by barge in the development of …

Barge operators hit by new charges as Rhine water levels sink to new lows

Barge operators have been hit by water levels along the Rhine being at their lowest in almost a century, following a prolonged drought.
One source told The Loadstar the water at Bingen was so low “one could cross the German river by foot, something never seen before”.
The source added: “Duisburg has been out of reach for six days, and operators have cancelled charter shipments on many barges.
“Contargo alone moves approximately 50,000 containers a month on around …

India’s forwarders eye more use of barges to reduce logistics costs

India’s government and logistics operators are looking to barges to bring down the cost and improve the routing of domestic cargo.
Promoting the use of barges was welcomed by the Federation of Freight Forwarders Association in India’s Debashis Dutta.
“Inland waterways offer the cheapest form of internal transport, and government is motivating companies to use this over road and rail,” Mr Dutta told The Loadstar on the sidelines of this week’s FIATA World …
