Bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond targets more ‘price-gouging’ shipping lines

The ghost of bankrupt Bed, Bath & Beyond continues to haunt the container shipping industry, seeking payback for alleged wrongs suffered during the supply chain crisis.

Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) filed for bankruptcy protection on April 23. Its brand name was sold to Overstock in June. The liquidation of the BBBY estate is ongoing, with the bankruptcy administrator seeking to collect as much as it can via legal claims to help pay off creditors.

Court documents confirm that part of this collection...

Bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond goes after container shipping lines

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy protection on April 23 and is closing all 475 of its stores. COVID-era supply chain disruptions played a key role in the company’s demise. Now, the bankrupt retailer is pursuing tens of millions of dollars in claims against container shipping lines, which it alleges did not perform during the supply chain crisis.

It filed a claim with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) on Thursday seeking at least $31.7 million from OOCL, a subsidiary of China’s Cosco.

It’...

The state of same-day delivery

The state of the same-day delivery market for Amazon and others

The United States is undeniably on a same-day delivery binge. The graphs of the U.S.’s e-commerce market size and Amazon’s free-delivery times are near-perfect mirror images of each other, with delivery times plummeting as e-commerce takes off. Estimates put the percentage of retailers offering same-day services anywhere between 50% and 67% as consumers are becoming increasingly impatient — according to a 2020 McKinsey report, about half of them abandoned their online shopping carts because of...

Bed Bath & Beyond’s rethinking of supply chain driving digital gains

Two years ago, Bed Bath & Beyond was behind the times. Prior to the pandemic, the company focused almost exclusively on in-store sales.

“The pandemic taught all of us hard lessons,” COO John Hartmann said during his opening keynote address on Wednesday at the Home Delivery World 2021 conference in Philadelphia. “For Bed Bath & Beyond, that was [we were] behind the curve.”

Executive leadership at the company has turned over, including Hartmann himself, and a new focus on technology, innovation and...

Bed Bath & Beyond aims to reduce store replenishment time from 35 days to 10

This is an excerpt from Monday’s (4/26) Point of Sale retail supply chain newsletter sponsored by ArcBest.

In a research note penned late last year, UBS analysts called Bed Bath & Beyond’s supply chain “primitive.” It’s a sharp take, but Beyond’s executives understand the company’s got a lot of catching up to do in many areas. Prior to former Target Head of Merchandising Tritton coming aboard as CEO, Bed Bath & Beyond seemed stuck in neutral, losing market share while forgetting to innovate. My...
