Furetank completes milestone bio-LNG bunkering

Donsö, Sweden-headquartered Furetank, a pioneer in the LNG-fueled tanker sector, reports that its tanker Fure Viken has been bunkered with 200 tonnes of ISCC certified bio-LNG, in collaboration with environmental commodity trader STX Group and Molgas. The operation was carried out while Fure Viken was anchored outside Mongstad, Norway, and will help Furetank comply with the new FuelEU Maritime regulation, requiring a two per cent reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of vessel fuel by 2025.

Hapag-Lloyd in $4B, 24-ship ordering spree at two Chinese yards

Hapag-Lloyd has signed separate contracts with two Chinese shipyards for a total of 24 new containerships. All will be equipped with state-of-the-art low emission, high pressure LNG dual-fuel engines capable of operation on biomethane (bio LNG), which can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems. They will also be ammonia-ready.

Hapag-Lloyd says the newbuildings will have a combined capacity of 312,000 TEU and involve a combined investment volume of around...

ZEMBA deal will see Gasum bunker Hapag-Lloyd ships with 20,000 tonnes of bio-LNG

Nordic region energy company Gasum Oy is to supply Hapag-Lloyd containerships with liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) over a two-year tender period. Earlier this year, Hapag-Lloyd won the first tender by the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) for ocean shipping based on waste-based bio-LNG that achieves at least a 90% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Key cargo owners look for zero-emission shipping by 2025

MOL eyes cow manure as a source of bio-LNG

Ocean shipping accounts for about 2-3% of world GHG emissions. Meantime, cattle are an even larger source, due to the methane they produce during digestion and through manure. They account for the biggest part of the 14.5% of all GHG emissions produced by livestock.

Be that as it may, Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and MOL Sunflower Ltd are eyeing that manure as a source of marine fuel — liquefied biomethane, or bio-LNG.

MOL and MOL Sunflower are cooperating with Hamanaka Town, JA...

Viking Lines set to slash emissions in Green Corridor demo

Thursday, August 29, will be Baltic Sea Day and Finland’s Viking Line will mark it by starting a week in which its vessels serving the Turku, Finland, to Stockholm, Sweden, route will reduce their emissions by 90% by operating for the first time for a whole week solely on liquefied biogas (bio LNG), long identified as a prime pathway to carbon neutrality.

Viking Line says that its Viking Glory and Viking Grace will “demonstrate what the future looks like for the first green shipping corridor on...

EC’s Union Database plan could limit biofuel availability to ships

The European Union is setting up a Union Database (UDB) of biofuels. The database aims to ensure the traceability of liquid and gaseous biofuels that are eligible for being counted towards the share of renewable energy in the transportation sector in any EU member state. One aspect of the European Commission’s plans for the UDB is causing “deep concerns” to both the Methanol Institute (MI) and SEA-LNG, key representatives of the methanol and liquefied natural gas (LNG) industries respectively,,

Hapag-Lloyd in largest yet ship-to-ship bio-LNG bunkering

Titan Clean Fuels has successfully bunkered the Hapag-Lloyd containership Brussels Express with 2,200 tonnes of bio-LNG containership. Believed to be the largest yet ship-to-ship bioLNG bunkering of the fuel, the operation marked Hapag-Lloyd’s entry into using the fuel.

According to the Sea-LNG coalition, the use of bio-LNG as a marine fuel can reduce GHG emissions by up to 80% compared to marine diesel on a full well-to-wake basis. Derived from biomethane produced from sustainable biomass,...
