Maximizing the potential of biofuels in shipping

A white paper by DNV examines the growing uptake of biofuels in shipping and provides practical guidance around their use.

With several biofuels seen as “sustainable”, these can provide immediate decarbonization results for shipowners, especially as they can be deployed as a “drop-in” fuel to engines designed for operation on conventional fuel oils. The DNV white paper examines the latest supply and bunkering trends while providing details of the most important technical and operational...

Significant increase in biofuel usage to meet GHG reduction targets

The latest FOBAS Fuel Insight Report highlights rising biofuel uptake, ongoing issues with off-specification fuels and the impact of new regulatory measures.

The latest analysis from Lloyd’s Register’s Fuel Oil Bunkering Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS) highlights a significant increase in biofuel usage, primarily driven by EU and IMO regulations, including the Mediterranean SOx (Sulphur Oxides) Emission Control Area (SECA) coming into effect on 1 May 2025.

IBIA leads change in the rules for the carriage of biofuels by bunker vessels

In November 2023 IBIA submitted a document to IMO on the carriage of biofuels for supply to a ship for use as fuel oil on board that ship. This highlighted that as conventional bunker vessels were limited in carrying fuel oil of no more than 25% biofuel it presented a potential impediment to the global adoption of biofuels as fuel oil for ships and so to the ambition for the decarbonization of international shipping in the short term, as set out in the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy.

IBIA therefore...
