Furetank completes milestone bio-LNG bunkering

Donsö, Sweden-headquartered Furetank, a pioneer in the LNG-fueled tanker sector, reports that its tanker Fure Viken has been bunkered with 200 tonnes of ISCC certified bio-LNG, in collaboration with environmental commodity trader STX Group and Molgas. The operation was carried out while Fure Viken was anchored outside Mongstad, Norway, and will help Furetank comply with the new FuelEU Maritime regulation, requiring a two per cent reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of vessel fuel by 2025.

Hapag-Lloyd in $4B, 24-ship ordering spree at two Chinese yards

Hapag-Lloyd has signed separate contracts with two Chinese shipyards for a total of 24 new containerships. All will be equipped with state-of-the-art low emission, high pressure LNG dual-fuel engines capable of operation on biomethane (bio LNG), which can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems. They will also be ammonia-ready.

Hapag-Lloyd says the newbuildings will have a combined capacity of 312,000 TEU and involve a combined investment volume of around...

MOL eyes cow manure as a source of bio-LNG

Ocean shipping accounts for about 2-3% of world GHG emissions. Meantime, cattle are an even larger source, due to the methane they produce during digestion and through manure. They account for the biggest part of the 14.5% of all GHG emissions produced by livestock.

Be that as it may, Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and MOL Sunflower Ltd are eyeing that manure as a source of marine fuel — liquefied biomethane, or bio-LNG.

MOL and MOL Sunflower are cooperating with Hamanaka Town, JA...

Axpo & Baleària Completes World’s First Carbon-free Ferry Trial

  • Axpo Iberia and the Spanish ferry operator Baleària reached an important milestone for zero-emission maritime shipping.
  • For the first time in Europe, a high-speed ferry has made a test crossing using only fuel from 100% renewable sources.

The ferry ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’, flagship of the Baleària fleet, is equipped with natural gas hybrid engines and completed the route of 133 nautical miles between Barcelona and Ciutadella (Menorca) using renewable biomethane certified by Axpo Iberia, reaching...

CMA CGM To Enhance Environmental Performance With Biomethane

On April 8, 2021, Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Group Chairman & CEO, announced in his address to the United Nations Global Compact the support of the production of 12,000 tons of biomethane (equivalent to one-year’s consumption of two 1,400-TEU vessels), reports Marine Insight.

Renewable gas

Biomethane is a renewable green gas produced from sources including organic and plant waste from European agriculture that is processed at methanation facilities.

Thanks to biomethane, the CMA CGM Group, a world...
