CMA CGM Picks Biomethane for 1st Low-carbon Shipping

CMA CGM launches a first low-carbon shipping solution, bringing the Group a step closer toward carbon neutrality, says a press release published on their website.

Low-carbon shipping

CMA CGM provides customers with a new and immediately available solution, bringing the Group a step closer toward carbon neutrality, with biomethane, non-fossil energy.

12,000 tonnes of biomethane, the equivalent of two 1,400-TEU LNG-powered ships on an intra-European service for a whole year.

Total Acquires Leading Biogas Producer in Green Push

French energy company Total’s acquisition of a major biogas producer in the country will help boost its ability to supply bio-LNG as a marine fuel, reports Ship & Bunker.

LNG for maritime decarbonization

On Monday, Total announced the acquisition of Fonroche Biogaz, the largest producer of renewable gas in France. The company now plans to produce 4-6 TWh/year of biomethane by 2030.

This is an important step forward for us to realise bio-LNG as a real marine fuel solution for shipping’s...

Bio-LNG Bunkering In Rotterdam was A “One-Off”

The use of biomethane in Total’s first bunkering of the CMA CGM Jacques Saade at Rotterdam earlier this month was a ‘one-off’ rather than a regular part for the container line, according to an article published in Ship & Bunker.

About 13% of the 17,300 m3 of LNG Total supplied to the new gas powered boxship was biomethane.

Spokesperson’s Comment

“This biomethane is a one-off, delivered as a spot contract, but a world premiere scale and promising one.”

“We will consider biomethane for future...

Studies Highlight LBM and LSM As Viable Bunker Fuel

  • SEA-LNG released the latest in its series of independently conducted reports.
  • It analyses the availability and costs of Liquefied Bio Methane (LBM) and Liquefied Synthetic Methane (LSM).
  • They are available in sufficient quantities to make a contribution towards future decarbonization.
  • Costs need not be significantly higher than those of other low- and zero-carbon fuels.
  • They are commercially competitive relative to other low- and zero-carbon fuels.

Maersk Focuses on the Development of New Fuels To Decarbonise Shipping

Maersk is speeding up its research into the three options to make new fuel available to decarbonise shipping by 2050, reports Lloyd’s List.

Decarbonisation deadline 2030?

Danish carrier sets its focus on alcohol, biomethane and ammonia in an effort to concentrate industry efforts in developing new fuels and infrastructure.

Maersk sees 2030 as the deadline as it wants to have all shipping decarbonised by 2050, which given the working life of a ship would require the first non-fossil fuelled vessels...
