States of emergency declared ahead of major winter storm

The governors of at least three states issued states of emergency Tuesday, just ahead of a major winter storm threatening areas from the Plains to the Northeast.

The storm is forecast to dump heavy snow in some places over the next two days, while other places will see sleet and freezing rain, leading to very icy roads. The storm will also generate strong winds and periods of blizzard conditions.

I-80 remains closed during eastern California blizzard

The latest snowstorm to hit the Sierra Nevada in the past week is keeping portions of Interstate 80, as well as U.S. and state routes in eastern California, shut down until further notice. This is according to officials with the California Department of Transportation and the California Highway Patrol.

At least 3 injured in Nevada pileup during blizzard

With drivers reporting whiteout conditions, up to 20 cars were involved in a crash in northwestern Nevada Sunday morning, according to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, which responded to the pileup, said at least three people were taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

“Conditions are extreme in the Washoe Valley with 50 mph winds and whiteout conditions,” the department said in a post to Twitter.
