Emirates leases additional Boeing 747 freighters to meet shipper demand

Emirates, the fourth-largest cargo airline in the world by traffic carried and No. 2 in passengers, said Wednesday it has increased main-deck cargo capacity by 15% with the wet lease of two additional Boeing 747-400 freighters to meet surging demand. 

The large all-cargo aircraft are being rented under a multiyear transportation services agreement with Bulgaria-based Compass Cargo Airlines, the Dubai-based carrier said in a news release.

End of production era, but 747 freighters will fly for decades

Boeing will hand over the last 747 ever made to Atlas Air on Tuesday, marking the end of an era for an iconic aircraft that transformed air travel and made it accessible to the average person. From the 747-100 to the 747-400, and then the modern 747-8, Boeing built both passenger and freighter versions. And many used 747 passenger jets were eventually converted to freighters by third-party engineering firms.

US moves to confiscate Venezuelan 747 cargo jet with Iran ties

Atlas Air, DHL Express buy large Boeing freighters

Atlas Air Worldwide (NASDQ: AAWW) and DHL Express on Tuesday announced significant purchases of production freighters from Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) to help stay ahead of demand trends for the air cargo market.

Atlas Air ordered four 747-8 cargo planes, adding to the world’s largest fleet of 747s, while Deutsche Post DHL’s (DIX: DPW) express delivery arm said it will purchase eight 777 freighters.

Retired British Airways 747 catches fire during recycling in Spain

A retired British Airways jumbo jet in storage at an airport in Spain caught fire Monday during the dismantling process, British Airways said after images of the event spread on social media.

Video from the scene at Castellón Airport shows smoke pouring from the cockpit area. Airport emergency crews quickly extinguished the fire, British Airways said. No injuries were reported.
