How do wildfires get their names?

This year has not been kind to firefighting crews across the country. As of Tuesday, 40,681 wildfires were burning nationwide, 1,289 more than this time last year. This is according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Almost 100 of these fires were classified as large. FreightWaves has been tracking the wildfires, such as Bootleg, Dixie and Rogers Creek. Here’s how they get their names.

Large wildfires still burning millions of acres out West

Dozens of large wildfires are still scorching land in more than a dozen states across the country. Eleven of these states are in the West.

As of Thursday, these 79 large fires had burned almost 1.5 million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Largest wildfire in US nearly 400,000 acres in size

The Bootleg fire is the largest in the country and is just one of dozens of large wildfires burning out West.

As of Wednesday evening, the Bootleg fire had merged with the nearby Log fire and was scorching almost 400,000 acres in southern Oregon. It’s been burning for 16 days in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, approximately 11 miles northeast of Sprague River. Fire officials said Wednesday that the fire likely started as a result of a lightning strike.

Elevated wildfire risk sweeping across the West

Dozens of wildfires are still burning across the West, a few of them now covering more than 100,000 acres each. The largest one reported to InciWeb, the National Fire Information Center’s website, is the Bootleg fire in southern Oregon. It was about 364,000 acres in size as of Monday evening — bigger than New York City — and only 30% contained.
