FreightWaves recently chatted with Jon Barela, CEO of the Borderplex Alliance, about the port of El Paso’s role in global trade and how the city can continue to capitalize on its location along the United States-Mexico border.

The Borderplex Alliance is an El Paso-based economic development nonprofit. In the past nine months, Amazon Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), T.J. Maxx Inc. (NYSE: TJX) and Critical Materials Corp. have announced plans for major distribution centers in the far West Texas city.

‘Just so big’: China’s outsize role in trade at Texas border crossings

Though well behind Mexico, China ranks second for international trade at the three largest United States-Mexico border crossings in Texas: Laredo, El Paso and Pharr.

Its status on the border is buoyed by imports of auto parts, cellphones, electrical circuit boards and other goods, say public officials and industry experts.

Leaders say USMCA aiding border industries’ recovery from pandemic

The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is already proving that keeping trade flowing through North America benefits all three nations, according to Ruth Hughs, Texas secretary of state.

“[Texas] would not be the economic powerhouse that we currently are without our trading partners in Mexico and in Canada,” Hughes said during a panel discussion, “USMCA implementation and the importance of regionalism,” on Thursday.
