November trucking jobs see healthy rise; a one-time move or start of a trend?

The number of seasonally adjusted jobs in the truck transportation sector reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday could be viewed as either another data point in a rut of seven months or more in duration or the first sign of a breakout to the upside.

With the 2,900-job increase in November from a revised October figure, truck transportation jobs stood at 1,548,700 jobs. Supporting the view of the numbers as a rut is the fact that the November total was just 700 jobs higher than...

Jobs report: Downward trend continues in trucking; warehouses see huge drop

In a jobs report that again showed truck transportation employment trending lower, a big downward move in the data for warehousing and storage was the most striking number for the October report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Truck transportation jobs in September totaled 1,543,600, down 700 from a revised August figure of 1,544,300.

The August figure was revised upward by 800 jobs from what was originally reported. The decline from August to September combined with a small upward revision...

Truck transportation jobs about where they were when Yellow folded a year ago

The most notable number in this week’s employment report for truck transportation might be a difference of 400 jobs.

In a Bureau of Labor Statistics report that noted relatively moderate movement in jobs statistics overall, the seasonally adjusted figure for truck transportation came in at 1,543,500 jobs.

That is only 400 more than the 1,543,100 reported in August of last year, the first month reported by BLS that took into account the closure of LTL carrier Yellow that month.

Total truck...

Transportation/warehouse job figures for 2024 rise after annual adjustment

In a report that showed the U.S. has had a lot fewer jobs in 2024 than originally believed, one number stood out: Transportation and warehousing had more than what was thought.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its annual preliminary benchmark revision to its establishment survey. The survey provides the basis for the statistical process that converts data into the employment report that is released on the first (or sometimes second) Friday of each month.

As expected by market observers,...

Minor decline in truck transportation jobs reported for June

Truck transportation jobs had an uneventful month in June, dropping by the smallest increment that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

Changes up or down are reported by the BLS in increments of 100 (unless they’re zero), and that is the change reported by the BLS for June: a decline of 100 jobs to 1,548,600 jobs.

The BLS also reported downward revisions for May and April,

The seasonally adjusted figure for May was 1,548,700 jobs, down 1,400 jobs from what was posted a month earlier for May....

Truck transportation jobs down in May; total now matches November

Truck transportation jobs break 6-month string of gains with slight loss

For the first time in six months, the number of truck transportation jobs have declined from the prior month.

Truck transportation jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ report for April, fell by 300 jobs, to 1,557,800. It marked the seventh consecutive month of relatively small movement in the total employment number following two years of wild swings driven by the pandemic, the historically strong freight market that followed, the subsequent freight recession and the midyear 2023...

Jobs report: Truck transportation employment flat; warehouse jobs drop again

Jobs in the truck transportation sector mostly treaded water in February while warehouse jobs continued their long slide, according to the monthly report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In the truck transportation sector, the loss of 300 jobs was the smallest one-month change up or down since August 2022, when an increase of 300 jobs was recorded. The total for February was 1,551,200 jobs.
