Leaders say USMCA aiding border industries’ recovery from pandemic

The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is already proving that keeping trade flowing through North America benefits all three nations, according to Ruth Hughs, Texas secretary of state.

“[Texas] would not be the economic powerhouse that we currently are without our trading partners in Mexico and in Canada,” Hughes said during a panel discussion, “USMCA implementation and the importance of regionalism,” on Thursday.

The panel was hosted by the El Paso, Texas-based Borderplex Alliance

About 85,000 truck drivers entered Canada from the U.S. during the week ending Sunday, data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) released Tuesday shows. An almost identical number crossed during the comparable week in 2019.

Trucks crossing the U.S.-Canada border.

Since the United States-Canada border closed to nonessential travel in March, trucks have continued to move goods between the countries freely, even benefiting from the drop in car traffic. But one particular corner of the supply chain stopped in its tracks: the informal cross-border logistics of ordinary Canadians and small businesses.

“When the borders closed, getting those items across got more difficult,” Graham Robins, president and CEO of Vancouver-based A & A Customs Brokers, told...
