Canadian grain shippers hopeful about rail service in current crop year

Canadian grain producers generally expect rail service in the 2023-2024 harvest year to meet market needs, but they’re keeping an eye on other factors that could affect rail service in the coming years, such as grain export capacity at the Port of Vancouver.

Grain shippers are also waiting for the supply chain to completely recover from a July labor strike at the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

“It’s always the same story this time of year when it comes to rail service and rail capacity. We...

Canadian grain shippers, railroads brace for lower grain volumes

A photograph of strands of wheat.

Canadian grain shippers expect rail service to match demand this crop year, although lingering service issues from summer wildfires plus broader network capacity concerns are also on their minds.

Grain stakeholders anticipate lower volumes this crop year, which runs from Aug. 1 to July 31, 2022, as this summer’s drought in western Canada will likely lower crop volumes.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture expects Canadian wheat production to be its lowest since 2010-2011, resulting in lower export...

A photograph of grain hopper cars in a rail yard.

Despite significantly high Canadian grain volumes in February, Canadian grain shippers are still seeing some rail service issues as the network recovers from last month’s cold snap and nears the end of March.

“Several monitoring sources point to some significant challenges, which can be attributed to the deep freeze that blanketed the prairies in late February,” said Erin Gowriluk, executive director for the Grain Growers of Canada. “This severely constrained rail movement and the resulting...
