Will sustainability fall to the wayside this peak season?

Experts say sustainability comes second to capacity.

Port congestion, capacity constraints and fluctuating transportation prices are putting increasing stress on supply chains. As we enter peak season, these issues are unlikely to go away.

Experts have mixed opinions about whether sustainability remains a focus during peak season stress, but they agree on one thing: Capacity is king.

As people try to navigate difficult supply chain challenges, sustainability “may not be front and center for everybody,” AxleHire founder and President Daniel...

Why are supply chains so messed up?

ship

This is the question that I am asked on a daily basis. The issue is very complex, so I usually quip with a surprising response, “They’ve always had issues, but no one was really paying attention.” Turns out, unless the person works in freight, they are very unsatisfied with this answer. After all, freight and products just seemed to automatically show up before, but that is no longer the case.

Why women are more interested in driving trucks

Einride survey reveals technology is drawing women into trucking.

Emina Nilsson is a very social person. So when an opportunity arrived in her native Sweden to drive a truck for a living, she didn’t immediately embrace it. Sitting by herself all day behind the wheel? Not exactly her idea of fun.

“I never saw myself as the type of girl who would drive a truck,” she told FreightWaves.

International Women’s Day is March 8. Click here for more information.

But this was not your traditional diesel truck. Instead, it was an electric truck that she would be...

Consumer goods group lobbies for federal ‘air traffic control’ for trucks

The consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry wants the federal government to get involved in initiatives that measure freight demand — currently deployed solely by the private sector — to get a more accurate picture of available trucking capacity.

The proposal was included in a study released Tuesday sponsored by the Consumer Brands Association (CBA), the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and Iowa State University. The purpose: Identify, through industry comments and suggestions,...

‘Where have all the pallets gone? On shelves in warehouses, every one’

Forwarders are reporting a “serious” pallet shortage in the UK, adding to shipment costs.
Shippers and hauliers are having to buy new pallets, instead of sourcing second-hand.
One forwarder explained: “There are various reasons – there has been lots of stuff sitting on pallets in warehouses, as there is so much stock there.
“And during lockdown, pallet traders sold many to power stations to be incinerated just to get cash flow, depleting the …

Carriers impose restrictions as container shortages in Asian ports get worse

All the major carriers are experiencing equipment shortages at Asian ports with popular 40ft high cubes in particular short supply at Chinese depots.
Anecdotal reports to The Loadstar suggest CMA CGM currently has a shortage of equipment at all of the main Chinese ports, while other carriers are advising of shortages at some docks and “near normal” availability at others.

Korean Air jettisons passenger seats to up cargo capacity

Korean Air technicians inside a jet cabin lift out the last seats to make room for floor-loading cargo.

Projections that the capacity shortage in air cargo could last into next year and beyond are prompting some passenger airlines to spend money removing seats to make room for more boxes of goods.

Recent reconfigurations are taking place in Asia, with Korean Air the latest to take the plunge.

About 150 aircraft around the world have had their seats completely removed to increase cargo volume, Glyn Hughes, global head of cargo for the International Air Transport Association said Wednesday during a...

Coronavirus restrictions mean China’s hauliers still have too few drivers

Trucking firms in China are still experiencing a severe shortage of drivers returning to work.
Despite the official end to the extended lunar new year holiday this week, transport restrictions and other measures to combat coronavirus, have prevented truckers from operating anywhere near full capacity.
For example, according to Shanghai-based Marco Reichel, APAC business development manager at Crane Worldwide Logistics, most drivers require a permit to return to work and face quarantine …
