Lessons learned: A PFD or lifejacket is useless unless worn

In its latest Safety Digest, UK MAIB analyzed an accident concerning an open boat that was upturned in the sea. The skipper was fortunate enough to escape without using a life vessel, although he was not wearing his lifejacket, as he was carrying a waterproof mobile phone. MAIB highlighted that automatic cut-offs and other such devices should be properly maintained and tested in order to be efficient.

IMO Sec-Gen expresses sadness over Nyerere casualty

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has expressed his great sadness over the recent casualty of the Nyerere, the domestic ferry which capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, killing 224.

On behalf of the IMO membership, the Secretariat and myself, I would like to send our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the crew members and passengers who perished in the accident, as well as those who remain missing. Death toll from capsized vessel off Tanzania reaches 224

Death toll from the Tanzanian ferry ‘MV Nyerere’ has reached 224, after the vessel capsized in Lake Victoria on Thursday, Tanzanian authorities informed, while the ship’s managers have been detained for questioning.
