UK startup One Air launches cargo service with 1 jumbo jet

A new cargo airline based in the United Kingdom kicked off operations Monday with a single freighter and the prestige of being the only Boeing 747 operator in the country.

A freight recession would seem to be an inopportune time to launch a single-aircraft airline, but the founders of One Air sound confident the venture will attract shipper interest.

One Air said it completed a charter flight Monday evening for conglomerate Shandong Glory from Jinan, China, to London Heathrow Airport.

Amazon Air’s new reliance on hub airports increases efficiency

Amazon’s in-house cargo airline is strategically concentrating more traffic at its Cincinnati hub and three regional bases while deemphasizing point-to-point flying, according to a report released on Tuesday that also showed it increased flight activity in the past six months despite economic headwinds.

Contract carriers such as Air Transport Services Group (NASDAQ: ATSG) and Cargojet (TSX: CJT) have recently warned they expect to fly less in 2023 because of the downturn in shipping demand and...

Amazon dials back air cargo expansion as e-commerce sales slow

A white Amazon Prime jet with blue accents landing at an airport.

The growth of Amazon’s air cargo fleet and the number of daily flights has slowed in recent months, except at its Northern Kentucky hub and a few other geographic pockets. That reflects the mega-retailer’s more cautious approach to expansion in line with a recent pullback in warehouses because of decelerating e-commerce demand, according to research released Tuesday.

Amazon Air’s total flight activity only grew 3.8% from March through August, much less than the 14.3% growth in daily flights...

US targets Russian cargo airline Aviastar over sanctions violations

A gray Aviastar cargo plane with an orange tail on approach to an airport with wheels down.

The U.S. government on Thursday took enforcement action against Russian cargo airline Aviastar-TU for violating export control regulations imposed under sanctions for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Bureau of Industry and Security, part of the Commerce Department, blocked exports to Aviastar due to what it called “ongoing violations” of new U.S. licensing requirements for U.S.-origin aircraft. The primary accusation is that Aviastar continued to conduct international flights without obtaining...

The hiring of a new cargo chief from one of the world’s top cargo airlines to coincide with the arrival of a first freighter aircraft demonstrates how serious Canadian airline WestJet is about becoming a significant player in airfreight.

WestJet last week named Kirsten de Brujin as executive vice president for cargo to take over from Charles Duncan, who will now focus on the company’s ultra-low-cost offerings as president of subsidiary Swoop and soon-to-be acquired Sunwing Airlines. The company...

Ocean carrier Maersk unveils integrated air cargo service

A Star Air jet, white with blue tail, lifts off the runway. Star Air is now fully integrated into Maersk's logistics operation.

A.P. Moller-Maersk on Friday renamed its Star Air subsidiary as Maersk Air Cargo as the Danish container shipping giant prioritizes integrated logistics offerings and selling air cargo services directly to customers under a single brand.

The company said Maersk Air Cargo will shift its airfreight hub from Copenhagen to Denmark’s second-largest airport, Billund, and enter a labor agreement with the Flight Personnel Union to support the expansion of air operations.
