Buoyed by six straight months of historic volumes, the Port of Long Beach says that it is on course to reach 9.6 million TEU of cargo containers by the end of 2024 without congestion or other disruption and exceeding the previous record set during the pandemic in 2021.

Cargo volumes at the Port of New York and New Jersey fell 21% YoY to 662,740 TEUs in August as the seaport adjusts to lower retail volumes, reports supply chain dive.

Port Houston reported a record 14,000 trucks crossing through its gates in a single day in January, boosted by shipments of steel, plywood and dry bulk goods.

Port Houston sees huge bump in steel cargo

Port Houston’s steel cargo exports recorded a 1,874% year-over-year increase in January to 21,992 tons.

Imports of steel at the port recorded a 176% year-over-year increase to 440,883 tons. The year-over-year increased demand is part of the global steel industry’s rebound in construction and manufacturing. 

General imports during January increased by 61% year-over-year to 668,126 tons, and container imports increased 22% to 2.5 million tons.

Port of Long Beach marks best month ever

Executive Director Mario Cordero heralded the news that the Port of Long Beach had its busiest month ever in July as “a bright spot in the midst of the devastating effects of the coronavirus on the economy.”

The port said terminal operators and dockworkers in July moved 753,081 twenty-foot equivalent units, topping a record set in June 2018 of 752,188 TEUs. 

Total volume was up an impressive 21.1% in July compared to the same month in 2019.
