US weekly rail traffic shows strong gains

Big gains in both carload and intermodal traffic lifted U.S. weekly rail traffic to its biggest increase over 2024 levels in 10 weeks, and the second-biggest improvement of the year.

Statistics from the Association of American Railroads for the week that ended on Saturday show total volume of 513,553 carloads and intermodal units, an 8.6% gain over the same week a year ago. That includes 235,865 carloads, up 7.8% over the corresponding week in 2024, and 277,688 containers and trailers, up 9.4%.

For a fourth straight week, U.S. rail traffic has recorded an increase of more than 5% over the same week a year earlier.

Weekly U.S. rail traffic remains ahead of 2024 levels, with a third straight week of gains greater than 5%, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Weekly U.S. rail traffic was 508,531 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending March 1, up 5.4% from the same week a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) on Thursday reported total U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Feb. 15 of 480,740 carloads and intermodal units, up 1.5% compared with the same week in 2024.

Intermodal up but rail carloads down last week

U.S. rail traffic on a weekly basis was mixed for the week that ended last Saturday, according to the Association of American Railroads.

Intermodal volumes were up but carloads were down. The U.S. freight railroads originated 294,144 intermodal containers and trailers last week, a 5.5% increase from the same period in 2019. But carloads were down 10.5% to 224,146 carloads.

Combined, U.S. rail volumes totaled 518,290 carloads and intermodal units, a 2.1% drop from the same period a year ago.

Bigger trucks would divert intermodal and railcar traffic
