July Cass data reflective of cycle bottom

Monthly freight data compiled by Cass Information Systems showed year-over-year declines in shipments and expenditures narrowed in July.

The shipments component of the Cass Freight Index was down just 1.1% y/y during the month, the smallest y/y decline in 17 months, and supports the view that the worst of this cycle has passed. The subindex bounced back from an unseasonally weak June report. July shipments captured by the dataset increased 3% from June (3.1% higher after seasonal adjustments).

Cass: ‘Considerable cost relief is now highly probable for 2023’

Shipments and freight costs were up again in October on a year-over-year (y/y) comparison, according to data from Cass Information Systems. However, the Monday report cautioned that a modest increase in volumes was due to a variety of circumstances that are unlikely to recur and that shipments will likely turn negative y/y by next month.

The shipments component of the Cass Freight Index increased 2.9% y/y during the month but fell 1.4% from September. The change marked the second straight...

Freight shipments fell 7.4% seasonally adjusted from December to January, according to a Monday report from Cass Information Systems. The volumes component of the Cass Freight Index was also 2.9% lower year-over-year. The report called out a rise in omicron cases as the reason.

The drop in volumes “is about as good an answer as we have to the question of how big an impact Omicron-related absenteeism and quarantines had on the freight economy,” ACT Research’s Tim Denoyer commented in the report.
